Andrew Garfield, to face the prospect of multiple villains uniting against him in Columbia Pictures' “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”

Returning to the role of Peter Parker is Andrew Garfield, the BAFTA-winning actor who creates a new vision for the role in Columbia Pictures' “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

“It’s hard to be Peter Parker, but it’s great to be Spider-Man,” says Garfield. “As Peter Parker, he has all of the same problems that we all have – girl problems, money problems.

But when he puts on the suit, it’s a massive release. He can breathe. Spider-Man always knows the right thing to do – he’s a vessel for good, heroic energy and saving people. He takes joy and pleasure in it, and a playfulness comes out of him.”

Producer Avi Arad says that the role is quite complicated. Spider-Man is capable of so much that Peter Parker couldn’t do, but the heart of the character is always Peter. “Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created an incredibly complex character – the actor basically has to play two roles, Peter Parker and Spider-Man,” says Arad. “But Andrew can do it all – he’s the best actor I’ve seen in years. He has all of the humanity, he can create the conflict and the drama, he can even do all of the stunts that we’ll let him do. He’s such an amazing young man. To top it all off, Andrew has both a mental and a physical sense of humor, which is the true embodiment of Spider-Man.”

Garfield was eager to return to the role for many reasons – not least of which is the fact that he’s a huge fan of the character. “I know how important it is to be a fan. I know what Spider-Man can do for kids – and for people who aren’t kids anymore,” he says.

“For anyone who encounters the character, who has an affinity for him, it’s so reassuring when it’s done right. No matter what problems you have in your life, Spider-Man is there as evidence that you can get through it – because Peter Parker has all the problems of a kid, and he’s getting through it, too. He’s reaching out his hand to tell you it’ll be okay.”

The actor sees Spider-Man as the ultimate protector of the underdog. “He has an overdeveloped sense of responsibility and heroic impulse, but he has this deeply felt sense of justice,” Garfield explains. “That’s not something you can learn – you’re born that way.”

Garfield says that the filmmakers opened up the character much more in this film – harking back to the original characterization in the comic books. “Peter Parker trips over his own two feet, but Spider-Man can trip anybody up. He’s a trickster,” says Garfield. “One of the defining characteristics of the trickster is they turn their enemies’ weaknesses against themselves – rather than throwing punches and kicks, they are making their opponents beat themselves.”

To pull it off, Garfield trained and practiced and studied the masters. “Cal McCrystal was our ‘Clown Deviser’ – our name for a physical comedy consultant. There were certain scenes, certain ideas, that came directly out of conversations that I’d had with Cal. And I love Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton – I admire that skill. We had an opportunity to explore that as Spider-Man has the same kind of physical foolishness.”

Still, even as Spider-Man has to face the prospect of multiple villains uniting against him, Peter is sorting out what he’s going to do about the most important part of his life – Gwen Stacy. Peter hasn’t forgotten the promise he made to Captain Stacy, but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. “Peter and Gwen are giving it a go,” says Garfield. “For better or worse, Peter has an overdeveloped sense of responsibility. It’s hard for him to live with himself by breaking that promise, but impossible for him to live without her. He’s dealing with the guilt of a broken promise, but there’s also a destiny between them that they can’t deny. He’s a torn, confused young man trying to figure out the best thing to do.”

Opening across the Philippines on April 30 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and 2D formats, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Bryan, Francis, Kayen, and Osie face off in “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Doubles” grand finale this Saturday

The time has come for the Final Four contestants Bryan, Francis, Kayen, and Osie of “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Doubles” to step on the scale for their much-anticipated final weigh-in on Saturday (April 26).

After leaving the “Biggest Loser Doubles” camp, the four contestants have continued their weight loss journey. Whoever loses the highest percentage of their initial weight will receive a business franchise package, home appliance showcase, P100 worth of sporting goods and accessories, lifetime gym membership, P1 million and will be named the newest Pinoy Biggest Loser.

Team Magkapatid’s Bryan, the first to get into the Final Four, shared that the best part about losing a lot of weight is enjoying the little things he couldn’t do when he was still overweight.

“Before, I couldn’t even cross my legs. And I couldn’t jump either. Now, I feel like I’m flying whenever I jump,” he shared. He added that he will use the cash prize he will be winning in the finale to put up a business to help his family.

Kayen, meanwhile, plans to save it up for the future of her and husband Carl’s kid. But according to her, working out outside the camp has been harder than ever because she’s had to work and take care of their kid.

“I just applied everything we learned inside the camp to sustain my weight loss and to lose more. We started with nothing, and we got our health back. We are already winners,” remarked the dedicated working mom.

She said that Carl, who failed to make it to the Final Four, has played a big part in her journey as he encourages her to keep on whenever she feels pessimistic.

The dark horse of the competition, meanwhile, appears to be the Bagong Bigateam composed of Francis at Mommy Osie, the only pair to advance to the finale. The two, who were strangers when they got paired up, revealed they were surprised to reach the finale because they would always fight during the competition’s early stages.

“We even thought we wouldn’t get past the first elimination. During the first phase we hardly talked to each other. But our disagreements made us stronger as a team. The time came when we would reach a common decision and knew what the other thought just by looking at each other,” shared Francis.

Because they made it to the Final Four as a pair, whatever cash prize they receive in the finale will be doubled.

Mommy Osie, however, remarked that the cash prize is immaterial because the “Biggest Loser Doubles” has given her something that money can’t buy.

“I brought back a part of myself that I lost a long time ago. It’s not just confidence. I feel like I’m reborn little by little,” she said.

Who will emerge as the season’s Pinoy Biggest Loser? Don’t miss “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Doubles: Ang Bigating Pagtatapos” Saturday night (April 26) with host Iza Calzado, challenge masters Matteo Guidicelli and Robi Domingo, and fitness coaches Jim and Toni Saret.

Star Cinema's "Da Possessed" rakes astounding Php40 Million in three days

Vhong Navarro’s Da Possessed raked in an astounding Php40 Million in the box-office three days after its mainstream theatrical release which kicked off last 19.

Da Possessed is Vhong’s grand comeback vehicle to the big screen and based on the tremendous success on its recent opening day, the film has surpassed the opening day box-office returns of his previous successful films with director Bb. Joyce Bernal namely Mr. Suave (2003), D’ Anothers (2005), and Agent X44 (2007).

“The support of my fans is one of the most beautiful things that happened to me after everything that I’ve been through these past months,” says a jubilant Vhong. “I am humbled by the solid support that they gave to Da Possessed. I can really feel their love. Thanking them may not be enough. I will forever be grateful. I wish to thank all those who watched the movie and I know that a lot more are planning to watch it in the coming days.”

Da Possessed is also a perfect date movie this summer that features Vhong and Solenn as the newest and hottest love team tandem to hit the entire nation. Now dubbed by fans and supporters as the Vholenn tandem, moviegoers can look forward to non-stop laughter and romance. Solenn openly admitted that she had a crush on Vhong as she is very attracted to funny guys. “We were able to bond with each other during the shooting of this film,” says Solenn.

Vhong shares his success to his leading lady Solenn Heussaff. Solenn expresses her gratitude to everyone who gave support on her first team up with Vhong “I’m so happy and thrilled. The story is perfectly written and was easy laughing just reading it. With the execution of Direk Joyce, Vhong cast and the entire team, it became even more magical. So happy, blessed, honored to be part of this film and thankful to everything I learned from my director and co-stars shooting this movie. Congratulations Vhong, ikaw ang Da One!”

Loved for the highly identifiable “zero to hero” characters that he has portrayed through the years, Vhong has endeared himself to the entire nation as the Pinoy equivalent of “everyman” whom every Filipino can relate with. Vhong’s potent mass-appeal was further bolstered in 2009 when he joined ABS-CBN’s groundbreaking daily variety show It’s Showtime as one of its pioneering hosts.
