GMA Integrated News anchor and multi-platform veteran broadcast journalist Pia Arcangel has been announced as one of the finalists at the 2024 Association for International Broadcasting Awards (AIBs).
Arcangel, anchor of the flagship newscast 24 Oras Weekend, was shortlisted in the Presenter of the Year category and will compete with other prominent journalists from international outlets such as Al Jazeera English, ABC and CNA (Mediacorp).
This is Arcangel’s second time being recognized in this category, following a nomination in 2023 for her GMA Integrated News podcast “Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel.”
With a career spanning 20 years in the media industry, Arcangel has hosted documentaries, covered politics, crime, breaking news, sports and anchored news programs. She is among the most esteemed broadcast journalists of her generation. Aside from 24 Oras Weekend, Arcangel also anchors GMA Integrated News’ late night newscast Saksi and has anchored various news coverage specials, including the President’s annual “State of the Nation Address.”
Arcangel expressed her gratitude for this new recognition. “I am deeply honored to be included in this year’s shortlist for the AIBs Presenter of the Year Award, representing GMA Integrated News alongside esteemed journalists from around the world. This nomination is truly an inspiration to continue to deliver credible and relevant news that will in turn, inspire others to be catalysts for positive change in society,” she says.
Arcangel has also been featured as one of the speakers in the award-winning GMA Masterclass series which has already made rounds in major universities and schools across the Philippines. Her craft in delivering news has been recognized by Gandingan: The 14th UPLB Isko’t Iska’s Multi-media Awards in 2020, and she also won as Best TV Female Anchor in the 16th Gawad Tanglaw.
In the “Surprise Guest with Pia Arcangel” podcast, Arcangel makes conversations a little more exciting and spontaneous as she does her interviews without knowing beforehand who her guest will be.
The AIBs recognize the highest standards in journalism and factual productions across TV, radio, and digital platforms. Gaining a place on the shortlist is a significant achievement since the standard of entries across all the categories in 2024 has been extraordinarily high, with over 400 hours of work submitted – the highest number of entries in the competition’s history. Winners will be announced on November 22, 2024, at IET London: Savoy Place. For more updates on GMA Network, visit www.gmanetwork.com.
