Veteran actress Coney Reyes did not hold back her emotions as she addressed the spread of fake news during a recent press conference for her upcoming GMA Network series, ‘Shining Inheritance,’ the Philippine adaptation of the popular K-drama.
In the midst of discussing her return to television, Reyes expressed her deep frustration with the proliferation of false information, particularly on social media. This issue has become personal for Reyes as her son, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, has recently been the target of baseless rumors and fake news, coinciding with two graft cases filed against him.
While Reyes refrained from directly naming her son, the connection was evident. “Let’s spread good news, love, and kindness. Para gumaan naman ang buhay ng mga tao,” she implored. “I don’t know, it might not be the right venue to say it, but please allow me… I hate fake news! How can people try to put down other people just for their own gain? Ano, just to earn money? God can bless you. God can give you.”
Reyes continued with a heartfelt plea against the culture of tearing others down. “Bakit kailangan natin magsiraan? Bakit kailangan nating mag-imbento ng kung ano-anong kuwento? Bakit kailangan nating siraan ang bawat isa? Tama na! Paano tayo aasenso bilang isang bansa, paano?”
She also reflected on the importance of leaving a positive legacy, especially as the nation grapples with recent losses. “Ang dami na nating mga kaibigan na sumakabilang-buhay na recently. So many of them, na very affluent. Pero nakita natin, ano ang naalala sa kanila? Hindi naman ang pera nila, eh. Ang naalala sa kanila ay kung ano ang kabutihan na naiwan nila.”
Reyes shared a poignant childhood memory where she rebuked her sibling for littering, emphasizing the importance of setting a good example, even in small acts. “We have to be good examples to the people around us. Hindi ko sinasabi na in a big, big way. Even in a little way. And when you do that, may mga effect ‘yan na maganda,” she stated. “Let’s honor God in what we’re doing.”
