Former model and actor Aeron Cruz has shared heartfelt memories of the kindness shown to him by ‘It’s Showtime’ host Vhong Navarro during their time together in the Taguig City Jail in 2022.
In an interview with showbiz vlogger and talent manager Ogie Diaz, Cruz recounted his friendship with Navarro, which developed while they were both incarcerated.
“Naging maging kaibigan po kami. Sabay po kami kumakain, sabay po kami nagba-basketball,” Cruz recalled. “Kasi nu’ng first time po niya na pag-apak doon, wala po siyang friend.”
Cruz had first met Navarro during his stint on ‘Gandang Lalake Bidaman’ a segment of ‘It’s Showtime.’ However, due to Cruz’s significant transformation, Navarro did not recognize him at first.
Cruz witnessed Navarro’s generous spirit while in jail. “Meron po siyang natulungan na walang-wala. Hindi dinadalaw. Kaya napakabuti niya pong tao,” Cruz shared.
Navarro would share food from outside and provide assistance to inmates who were struggling. One of the most memorable moments for Cruz was Navarro’s reaction to his release. “Kuya Aeron, kumapit ka lang. Huwag mawawala ‘yung hope at saka ‘yung faith. Maniwala ka ikaw na ang next na lalaya,’” Cruz recounted.
Cruz was arrested on July 16, 2019, during an alleged set-up buy-bust operation. After a long period of prayer and hope, he was eventually acquitted and released.
Since his release, Cruz has wanted to reconnect with Navarro in person, but they have yet to find the opportunity. For now, they have managed an emotional video call to celebrate Cruz’s newfound freedom.
