Veteran actress Teresa Loyzaga has publicly shared the difficult journey she faced with her son Diego Loyzaga’s battle against drug addiction, revealing that she took the step of admitting him to a rehabilitation facility herself.
In an emotional interview with Boy Abunda, Teresa disclosed that she blamed herself for Diego’s situation, attributing it partly to her busy schedule in the past. “There was a part of me that died, but I wanted my son to live. So I had to put him to rehab,” she expressed.
Diego initially reacted with anger towards his mother for her decision. Teresa emphasized that during his addiction, Diego was not himself, highlighting the challenging nature of dealing with loved ones under the influence of drugs.
“He wasn’t himself then. We have to understand na ‘yung mga mahal natin sa buhay kapag ka nalulong sa droga, ‘pag kinausap mo sila at binabastos ka nila, hindi sila ‘yon,” she explained.
Throughout Diego’s eight-month rehabilitation journey, Teresa clandestinely visited him, despite restrictions preventing direct contact. “Hindi rin niya alam is bumibisita ako lagi sa kanya kahit na bawal kami magkita. That was part of his punishment for him to learn, to appreciate home, family,” she disclosed.
Teresa recounted monitoring Diego’s activities through a small monitor, ensuring he was eating and even sending him food.
This gesture was part of her effort to support him silently yet consistently during his recovery process.
