Comedian and television personality Joey de Leon found himself at the center of a social media storm after making a remark about actress Miles Ocampo’s body during a birthday celebration segment on the popular noontime show ‘Eat Bulaga.’
The incident occurred during Friday’s episode of the long-running variety program when the hosts were celebrating Ocampo’s birthday. Tito Sen extended his birthday wishes to Ocampo, remarking on her age, to which Joey de Leon interjected with a comment about her weight.
“Birthday mo, wala akong masasabi kundi pataas! Pataas ‘yung edad eh. Pataas,” Tito shared.
“Pataba! Ay pababa,” Joey quipped, drawing a mixed reaction from the audience and online viewers.
However, the joke quickly drew backlash from netizens who accused Joey of body-shaming Ocampo. Some criticized the comedian for his insensitivity and lack of tact in making light of someone’s appearance, particularly during a celebratory occasion.

Social media users expressed their disappointment with Joey’s remark, with some labeling it as tasteless and inappropriate, especially considering Ocampo’s recent health struggles.
Ocampo shared last year on her Instagram account that she had been diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma and underwent thyroidectomy surgery to remove her thyroid glands. She disclosed this information on April 14, explaining the scar visible on her neck.
The backlash against Joey’s joke has sparked discussions about the boundaries of humor and the importance of sensitivity, especially when addressing topics related to body image and health issues.
As of now, Joey de Leon has not issued any statement regarding the controversy.
