GMA Network has offered support to rival network ABS-CBN after the latter’s franchise renewal bid was denied in 2020.
During the contract signing event for ‘It’s Showtime’ at GMA Network, Vice Ganda, one of the show’s hosts, expressed gratitude for the assistance extended by GMA Networkto ABS-CBN during a challenging period.
Vice Ganda acknowledged the difficult situation ABS-CBN faced, emphasizing that GMA Network did not take advantage of their competitor’s downfall. Instead, they reached out a helping hand to aid ABS-CBN in its time of need.
“Hindi naman lingid sa kaalaman nating lahat kung gaano kasadsad ang isinadsad ng Kapamilya. Pero naririyan kayo hindi para tapakan kami at saktan pa sa panahong sadsad na sadsad kami,” Vice Ganda stated, highlighting the supportive stance taken by GMA Network.
The loss of ABS-CBN’s franchise in May 2020 came after 70 congressmen voted against its renewal, resulting in the expiration of its 25-year legislative franchise.
The network also faced criticism from former President Rodrigo Duterte for its failure to air his campaign advertisements during the 2016 elections.
Despite the challenges, ABS-CBN remained resilient, with its management issuing apologies and clarifications regarding limitations on airing local advertisements.
Vice Ganda’s acknowledgment of GMA Network’s support signifies a positive development in the relationship between the two major television networks in the Philippines. It reflects a spirit of cooperation and solidarity within the industry, demonstrating that competition does not always overshadow camaraderie.
