Unbroken and uninterrupted, the Kapamilya action-drama’s winning streak in the ratings game, proves Coco Martin’s unrivaled leadership on primetime’s most prize time slot.
At least since the pandemic and the ABS-CBN franchise denial, there has been no other Kapamilya show that consistently held ratings leadership on its timeslot, as long as FPJ’s Batang Quiapo did. After its seesaw battle with top rater, Voltes V Legacy, the Coco Martin-starrer eventually established a firm grip on the 8 PM slot, fending off new rival shows, Maging Sino Ka Man and Black Rider, in the ratings game.
Turning one this February 13, FPJ’s Batang Quiapo began its streak of uninterrupted reign on primetime’s most prized time slot (the 8 PM slot), on September 11, 2023, the day of Maging Sino Ka Man’s debut. Serving as Barbie Forteza and David Licauco’s highly anticipated follow-up project, after the phenomenal success of their pairing in Maria Clara at Ibarra, the mini-series inspired from the film of the same name, registered a pilot rating of 11.4, according to Nielsen Philippines. That was evidently lower than Batang Quiapo‘s 15.9, which improved massively from the 12.3 it generated during its last bout against Voltes V Legacy. It is worth-noting that Maging Sino Ka Man lost to its Kapamilya counterpart, both in aggregated and total ratings. Aggregated ratings take into account all telecasts across multiple timeslots of a TV show, while total ratings only base on linear airings of shows. Aggregated-wise, the Barda series was already way behind FPJ’s Batang Quiapo; total-wise, it sunk deeper in the competition, 9.4 versus 15.9.
Such a win for FPJ’s Batang Quiapo and a loss for Maging Sino Ka Man, would became the usual scenario in the ratings game, in the next two months, with the Coco Martin series claiming undisputed lead in ratings. From its debut on September 11 to its finale on November 3, Maging Sino Ka Man posted an average total people rating of 9.1, and an average aggregated people rating of 10.8, both paling in comparison with FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’s average of 14.7, From September 11, 2023 to February 1, 2024.
The Kapamilya series started confronting rival show on November 6, 2023, with Black Rider taking over Maging Sino Ka Man‘s timeslot. Topbilled by Kapuso action-drama prince, Ruru Madrid, Black Rider debuted with an impressive 12.1 in aggregated people ratings, but not impressive enough to topple FPJ’s Batang Quiapo‘s 15.5. Madrid’s series also notably lagged behind Martin’s by more than 5 rating points in the same-timeslot airing, 10.3 to 15.5.
Despite its early struggle to claim leadership in the ratings game, from Batang Quiapo, Black Rider ultimately improved in viewership, and in fact inched closer to its Kapamilya counterpart. Black Rider logged its first victory in the ratings game, when its aggregated ratings hit 12.8 on January 24, 2024, higher than Batang Quiapo‘s 12.2. It can be noted however, that the day fell on Wednesday.
Such a day is particularly disadvantageous to Batang Quiapo, as it does not air on A2Z on Wednesdays and Fridays, hence the usual lower ratings. That said, the Coco Martin drama remains the king of its timeslot, as Black Rider is yet to score a single victory in the total ratings game. FPJ’s Batang Quiapo is still the most preferred TV show on the 8 PM slot, a truth made more obvious by the exclusion of Black Rider‘s delayed telecast.
It can also be noted, that average-wise, Black Rider remains far behind FPJ’s Batang Quiapo, as its average total and aggregated TV ratings are logged at 10.1 and 11.7, respectively.
