Perfetti Van Melle (PVM), the global company behind the world’s beloved confectionery brands like Mentos, Chupa Chups and Fruittella, has partnered with PCX Markets to fulfil an ambitious and robust Sustainability roadmap, that not only exceeds the plastic reduction targets outlined by the Philippines’ Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act, but also simultaneously helps build a circular economy through social impact.
The landmark Philippine EPR Act, which was announced last year and came into effect in January 2023, requires large corporations to recover or divert at least 20 percent of their plastic packaging footprint by the end of 2023; then 40 percent by next year, and then increasing by 10 percent every year until at least 80 percent is recovered or diverted by 2028.
“At Perfetti Van Melle Philippines we believe that small moments and actions, when added up, can create a big, positive impact on people’s lives. This goes beyond the sweet treats we are known and loved for and includes taking action to help tackle large societal challenges like plastic pollution.
With the help of PCX, Perfetti Van Melle Philippines is on track to achieve 50 percent more than the EPR target for 2023, and we want to continue exceeding these targets in the coming years.” said David Roos, Managing Director, Perfetti Van Melle Philippines.
Perfetti Van Melle Philippines’ robust plastic diversion program, mobilized with PCX and its partners, ranges from community impact, through credits that support HOPE’s Aling Tindera project, to co-processing, recycling and upcycling. Going beyond government compliance, the company is focused on creating a sustainable value chain that touches on the important facets of its business and the community.
“Together with these plastic diversion initiatives, the company is focused on innovating its packaging materials to reduce plastic usage and find proper alternatives, creating even more value for Filipinos and safeguarding a better future,” said Roos.
“We’re excited to work with the Perfetti Van Melle team, who shares our mission to accelerate the transition to a circular economy and build a future where no plastic waste ends up in nature. It’s exciting to see such a high level of commitment to sustainable stewardship, innovation, and collaborative problem-solving,” said Rudi Ramin , Commercial Director, PCX Markets. “This is an incredibly committed organization that’s ready to take bold steps in reducing, reusing, and diverting plastic waste, while making a meaningful contribution to the community.”
