‘Costume’s a massive character’: Actress Ophelia Lovibond on how fashion tells a story in the comedy series Minx

Starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, Lionsgate Play exclusive series ‘Minx’ takes the viewer back to 1970s L.A. and its groovy fashion.

From bell-bottom pants and platform shoes to vibrant colors and bold patterns, the costumes in Minx play a crucial role in capturing the essence of the 1970s. Created and written by Ellen Rapoport, the series follows an earnest young feminist Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) who joins forces with a low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women.

In the show, each outfit not only helps build the world, but also reflects the characters’ personalities – and in the case of protagonist Joyce, even reflects her trajectory.

On fashion’s central role in the show, lead actress Ophelia Lovibond said,“Costume’s a massive character – it’s a huge part of the show. It’s definitely something that our viewers have enjoyed digesting…

You see Joyce quite buttoned up, and towards the end of Season 1, she starts to kind of release the pussybow. But she’s still in three-piece suits, she still uses her clothing as sort of an armor. In the same way that Joyce is becoming more confident, the trappings of fame and money have built her confidence, you see that kind of reflecting in the way she dresses…

She’s been frightened of looking too like a woman in case she’s undermined and not taken seriously. But now that she has got that a firm footing in that kind of business world, she feels comfortable to not have to dress like a man to get the respect of one.”
