Netizens disapproved of Oh’s’ latest revelation as they remembered Soberano’s previous statement that directly contradicted the executive’s claim.
The role of Mary Jane in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man (2017), could have been Liza Soberano’s. That seemed to be what Careless executive, Jeffrey Oh, was trying to suggest, when he appeared at the Philippine Creative Industries Summit on March 8.
During the summit, Oh talked to the audience about the blockbuster Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, which was top-billed by the British actor, Tom Holland.
“Imagine a Filipina actress was one of the biggest Marvel movies in history. Imagine, she was Mary Jane, what that would do for Philippine entertainment. She could’ve been representing our country all over the world. There are other stars in the same situation,” teased Oh, who shared that Soberano’s previous talent agency forbade her to try out for the role.
It can be noted, however, that Oh must have been referring to Michelle Jones (MJ), the main love interest of Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man, in the film.
“She was not allowed,” he revealed, adding “They reached out to her to audition [for the role of] Mary Jane, one of the most iconic characters. And she was not allowed because she had to do the same thing she was always doing.”
That said, it is interesting to note that way back in 2016, Soberano herself, clarified the rumors about her auditioning for the role of MJ, which eventually went to award-winning American actress Zendaya.
“It’s not really an invitation. I think it was what the fans wanted lang, fans of Marvel. I think one of them is Pinay and parang she tweeted that, parang kung merong magiging Mary Jane Watson, she would want it to be me,” Soberano said in one of her interviews.
The actress had a busy year in 2016, with her focus particularly fixed on the TV series, Dolce Amore.
“They offered me to audition to them but I wasn’t able to do it because everyday po; ’yung taping namin ng Dolce Amore,” she also clarified in a more recent interview.
Because of Oh and Soberano’s conflicting statements, chaos erupted on Twitter, with many ridiculing the pair for their inconsistencies.
“ANG KALAT NG CARELESS. THEY’RE TRULY LIVING UP TO THEIR NAME, CARELESS INDEED. GRABE STOP BEING A 88RISING WANNABE PLEASE LANG,” tweeted @_bigaon_, criticizing Soberano’s new talent agency’s PR style.

“what kind of copium they’re inhaling..…” wondered @wydenicee, seemingly suggesting that Oh must be high to share such a preposterous claim.
Bryan, meanwhile, jokingly noted what Zendaya must have felt if she learned that she only got the role because somebody more fitting backed out.
“Imagine being Zendaya… Walang ka alam-alam na may isang starlet sa pinas ang nagsasabing di sya naging MJ dahil di sya nakapag audition kaya lang napunta sa kanya ang role,” he tweeted.

“I’m sorry, no offense to Liza, but Zendaya and Tom had that chemistry and I cannot imagine anyone to have that role of Mary Jane. Zendaya is perfect for that role as is,” tweeted Honey who argued that Zendaya and Tom Holland are already perfect for their roles in the superhero film.
