The Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid was recently dubbed as the Julia Roberts of the Philippines by Jojo Gabinete of Abante.
In an article posted on March 23, Gabinete unabashedly stated that Regine is the Filipina counterpart of Hollywood actress Julia Roberts. According to him, both Velasquez and Roberts had a series of blockbuster romantic comedy movies.
Roberts, as the whole world knows, had blockbuster romcoms including “Pretty Woman”, “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, “Notting Hill”, “Runaway Bride”, “Valentine’s Day” and “Eat Pray Love”.
Gabinete did not break that down his comparison into details, but there’s truth to the statement that Regine starred in several blockbuster rom-com movies in the early 2000s.
Most noteworthy of those are the movies “Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw” with Robin Padilla in 2000, “Pangako, Ikaw Lang” with Aga Muhlach in 2001, “Ikaw Lamang Hanggang Ngayon” with Richard Gomez in 2002, “Till I Met You” with Robin Padilla in 2006 and “Paano Kita Iibigin” with Piolo Pascual in 2007.
As a testament to her box office drawing power, Regine was even awarded a couple of box-office queen awards during that time.
But whether you agree with Gabinete’s statement or not, there’s no question that Regine’s star hasn’t dimmed. Fact is, she’s still the country’s top diva and is still a bankable actress.
No wonder, GMA Network has entrusted her with a new teleserye that’s bound to give viewers good vibes and lessons to boot.
Regine will be on primetime via a new comedy-drama series titled “Poor Señorita”. The teleserye will be airing its premiere telecast on the Kapuso Network this coming Monday, March 28.
Regine will play the role of Rita Villon, an heiress to a successful perfume company. She loses her wealth in a series of unfortunate events. In a bid to get back on top, she crosses path with five street children, who will help her in her struggles as a poor señorita.
The series will be helmed by Dominic Zapata and it will take over the timeslot vacated by “Little Nanay”.
