Motorola has been silent for a long time in the market when it comes to the smartphones category.
The latest popular of their device was the G series. This 2022–they introduced the Edge series–the MOTOROLA EDGE 20 FUSION.
It targets a mid-range segment. The best experience for the Motorola smartphone is its clean and pure stock Android experience with no bloatware apps installed.
The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion is a compact and light smartphone compared to the past models that were bulky. It is supported with an AMOLED display, equipped with Mediatek Dimensity 800u chipset, and a 108mp camera.
INSIDE THE BOX: One can find the Motorola Edge 20 Fusion warranty papers and manual, a free jelly cover case, Type-C cable with a 30W power brick, and the good news there is an earphone included inside.
THE DESIGN: The device gets a polycarbonate back not glass.
It is slimmer and weighs around 185 grams and is 8.25mm thick. The back is curved around the sides, with a matte finish in the logo in middle. The matte finish can catch a lot of fingerprints and smudges when you do not use the free cover case. There is a square camera module that houses the three cameras so keeping it flat you can feel the wabble because of the camera hump.
Around the side, it is made of a plastic frame. Here you can find the dedicated Google Assistant key on the left with the card slot. On the right side, there are volume buttons and power that have a fingerprint scanner on them and it is very fast and responsive. At the bottom, there is USB Type-C port, and yes a 3.4mm headphone jack, a primary microphone, and the speaker grille.
At the top, there is a secondary noise-canceling hole. In front, the display with Dragontrail glass protection and a punch-hole centered at the top plus decent thick bezels around the sides.
DISPLAY: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion has a larger 6.7 inches Full HD AMOLED display.
I believe this is the first mid-range smartphone to have an AMOLED display. With this, the color reproduction is good and viewing angles are excellent. It supports a 90Hz refresh rate that helps scrolling to be smoother and feels buttery in the user interface.
One can switch to 60HZ to save some battery life. The display looks more vibrant and has better color reproduction. The display also supports HDR10 so you can stream HD content on YouTube plus it has Widevine L1 ensuring HDR content such as on Netflix. There is an Attentive Display which keeps the screens on as you are looking at it. It also has a 180hz touch sampling rate that makes response quicker during gaming. The brightness of the device is pretty normal it is still visible under direct sunlight. Overall, it is good for media consumption.
PERFORMANCE: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion is powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 800U chipset. It is a good chipset for gaming and daily use to handle minor tasks.
Activities like scrolling in webpages, multi-tasking between applications, and playing light games feel smoother. Heavy graphics or intensive games are playable there are slight frame drops when the device slowly gets warm, luckily Motorola has implemented a vapor cooling system to dissipate heat, thermal throttling is under control.
There is support for virtual expansion so you can extend another 2GB ram for usage. Aside from the default storage of 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 you can still expand it via a microSD card. There are 5G connectivity bands available which means good for connectivity in the future.
SOFTWARE: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion runs on Android 11 out of the box with a stock Android look.
It is a clean and very smooth software experience. No bloatware or third-party apps are installed in default except Motorola applications. The software has customization you can set up your desired icon shape, size, color themes. It has an Attentive Display and Peek Display feature.
The software has a lot of gestures available such as double press to open the camera, swiping three fingers for screenshot, chopping to turn off and on the flashlight, swiping the edge to enable split–screen for two applications and it is quite handy to use.
There is also a feature called Ready For where you can view content and use apps from your Motorola phone to PC.
There is also a gaming mode called Gametime that blocs all calls and notifications when gaming and enabled. This will ensure no distraction and smooth gaming.
Well upon observing, some important apps are missing such as gallery apps where you have to rely on Google photos for your photo gallery overall it provides a great software experience.
AUDIO: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion equips a single speaker but is loud though it lacks a stereo speaker. The sound is good and does not feel lowered even at the highest volume settings. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack for solo listening of emo music and Dolby Atmos supported for enhancing sound quality.
BATTERY: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion packs a 5000mah battery capacity and it can last for two days without charging in normal usage. Heavy usage lasted to one day or with some charge left. The battery optimization is better I got a screen on time around 6-8 hours.
The device is also getting a 30W Turbo Fast Charger inside the box a USB type C to type C cable. You can charge the device around 0 to 100 with 1 hour and 30 minutes considering the battery capacity.
The battery life is very good on this device and I have learned that it supports reverse wired charging.
CAMERA: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion has a 108MP Samsung HM2 sensor for the main, an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, there is a 32MP camera for selfies.
It is a super-advanced main camera with Ultra Pixel technology for a sharper image, the result is an incredibly sharp and bright image.
The main camera captures with good color saturation and dynamic range. Contrast is maintained. The colors look natural and have no noise. Using 8x zoom the images captured have a good dynamic range and are not soft. Using it under low light, images come out with good details. There is a night mode feature in the camera where the highlights of the image are pretty good and restored.
The 8MP ultra-wide camera does good in dynamic and the details are decent. Color is similar to the natural but small noise is present. Zooming the image details is not over-sharpening. The ultra can double as a macro that takes you to close up images with decent details.
The ultra-wide fits 4x more scenes into the frame while Macro vision gets you closer to your subject.
During the night, ultra-wide does do a good job where details and dynamic range are average. There is a bit of noise and color saturation is not so good.
The 2mp depth sensor does a good job in terms of portrait and edge detection. The skin tones are natural, background blur is well implemented but the cutout or the edge could have been better.
On the front, when taking selfies the skin tones come out natural, Field of view is wider. The portrait selfies come out well with proper edge detection. It gives you quad pixel technology with more light sensitivity and automatically adjusts exposure and smooth uneven skin tones for portrait and night shots.
Video recording on Motorola Edge 20 Fusion can record around 4k at 30fps videos have better dynamic range. There is EIS enabled where does prevent shakiness. Using the ultra-wide camera for video recording can record 1080p at 30fps color- saturation is not so good, but with some noise present. Ultra steady mode enables stable videos for both ultra and main cameras. You can record any of the two cameras concomitant with the Dual Capture mode.
Cameras are good and one of the best in the mid-range segment.
CONCLUSION: The Motorola Edge 20 Fusion is the best mid-range smartphone this year. When compared to the earlier Motorola smartphones–it has a sleek design, a good 90hz 10 bit AMOLED display for media usage, a decent Mediatek Dimensity 800u chipset to handle the basic task, and average games.
The software experience is great. It has lots of features enabled with Stock Android 11. Cameras are great, especially the 108MP main. Battery life is amazing, and getting 6-7 hours standard screen on time with 30W fast charging.
As a package, Motorola has delivered a good product for a mid-range segment with the best camera and software experience.
