Ethel Gabison, also known as ‘Ethel Booba’ posted on her Twitter account that she will avenge Filipinos who took offense at the viral video posted via social media by a Colombian man.
In the video, the Colombian shows an effigy of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and that of Miss Universe host, Steve Harvey being burned.
The video of the effigy burning was posted on New Year’s Day via Facebook account of the user named Noider Almanza Barraza.
Aside from burning, the guy plays with the camera and shows himself smiling, cheering and waving. The crowd also cheers and festive music is also heard in the background.
Ethel Booba on the other hand, ‘torched’ an effigy of her own. She posted on her Twitter account where the comedienne can be seen with an effigy of Pia Wurtzbach’s body with Noider Barraza’s face and she was holding a torch and while the effigy is already burning.
The effigy-burning video went viral and earned negative reactions from netizens.
After the backlash, Noider apologizes for posting the video and he explained that it is their tradition and actually the same is being done in other Latin American countries as well. He removed the video from his Facebook account.
The effigy-burning tradition in Colombia and Latin Americas is done during the celebration of the New Year’s Eve and is believe to ward-off bad luck in the coming year. The New Year’s Eve tradition is called, “año viejo” or Old Year , where the effigy is burned at the stroke of midnight.
As reported by Rappler, there are other Latin American social media users who posted the same effigy burning icon of Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach and Steve Harvey.
