Joshua Garcia is not the kind of actor when he was still starting in showbiz. Star Magic Head of Artist Training and Workshops, Direk Rahyan Carlos vividly recalls Garcia’s attitude.
In the virtual press conference for the Star Magic Workshops for 2021, the director mentioned how Garcia avoided workshops after exiting the Pinoy Big Brother House.
“Nung lumabas sya PBB, pinag workshop sya sa akin, tapos ang tamad tamad nya mag attend ng workshop. Ang sabi ko lang sa kanya, ‘if you’re not gonna be diligent in attending the workshop and doing assignments, and doing rehearsals, walang mangyayari sayo.’ Tough love ako sa kanya.”
Then, he said the young actor eventually improved his attitude toward workshops to the point that the actor started asking for sessions himself.
“Hanggang sa mamayang konti, nag-attend sya ng nag-attend ng workshop. Humusay nang humusay, hanggang naging ‘ibang klase ka ah.’ Tapos ngayon, siya na yung nag-aask ng workshop.
“Sabi nya ‘Direk mayroon akong role.’ I’m talking about Joshua Garcia. ‘Direk mayroon ako ngayon for Darna, pwede bang mag-one on one workshop sayo?’
“Wow, ikaw na nag-aask sa akin ng workshop ha,” Carlos exclaimed.
Garcia’s breakthrough came in when he got his first movie leading role via the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival movie Vince and Kath and James. In the said film, He won New Movie Actor of the Year in the 33rd PMPC Star Awards for Movies.
His acting chops earned him good reviews and even scored Best Actor nominations in the said festival, the 35th Luna Awards, and the 2017 FAMAS Awards along with his Best Supporting Actor nomination for Barcelona: A Love Untold.
He didn’t stop making waves in his acting as he headlined as part of the ensemble cast in the crime-drama primetime series The Good Son with Jerome Ponce, McCoy de Leon, and Nash Aguas. He won various acting awards for his highly acclaimed portrayal in the series as Joseph Buenavidez including a Best Drama Actor at the 32nd PMPC Star Awards for Television.
