Before her breakthrough performance in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry Fan Girl which earned her the Best Actress award, Charlie Dizon spent years auditioning for support roles.
Charlie’s real name is April Matienzo. Former ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio noticed her talents and gave her the screen name Charlie Dizon. Early on in her career, she appeared in films such as Finally Found Someone and Seven Sundays.
Additionally, before her stint in the local showbiz industry, Charlie already eyed stardom as she auditioned for a Korean Pop Star Agency, despite her parents’ initial disapproval as she left her studies at the University of Sto. Tomas. During her training, she met Momoland’s Nancy McDonie, who earlier this year called Charlie her best friend in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, issues with her contract arose, causing her to return to the country. Then, Charlie continued her studies and graduated with a degree in Human Resource Management at the College of St. Benilde.
Her career picked up by 2018 with her filmography including Sin Island, Bagani, and A Soldier’s Heart. As for Fan Girl, director Antoinette Jadaone revealed Charlie wasn’t the first choice for the role. However, she auditioned, got the part, and proved herself, earning her the well-deserved MMFF win.
Charlie also stars in the upcoming prequel of the iconic Filipino film Four Sisters and A Wedding, Four Sisters Before the Wedding. She takes on the role of Teddie Salazar, formerly portrayed by Toni Gonzaga.
