Why You Should See It
Kris Bernal’s versatility as a dramatic actress is highlighted in this inspiring story of broken family, and how two totally opposite sisters mend their broken relationship, when one of them has to step up to protect the other
‘Ate ng Ate Ko’ marks Kris Bernal’s return to primetime after leaving her previous home network, GMA. The weekly drama also marks the second time she takes on a role of an adult woman suffering a mental condition.
After a tragic accident that claimed both her parents’ lives, Riki (Kris Bernal) has to play the role of a parent to her younger sister, Yumi (Isabelle de Leon), who gets fed up with her because of her manipulative style of ‘guardianship’. After more than a decade since the accident, she now heads a successful company, while Yumi remains a rebellious brat who harbors unsolicited admiration for her older sister’s boyfriend, played by Jake Cuenca.
While Riki becomes more successful, her relationship with Yumi only further deteriorates, and with the impending rivalry posed by the latter’s hidden feelings for Riki’s boyfriend, things seem to get only worse. What will happen next, however, will turn things around for both sisters. An accident, which would only remind the two of their parents’ unfortunate passing, throws Riki and Yumi into chaos, when the former suffers a mental condition that makes her believe and behave as a child. Yumi now faces the challenge of playing her older sister’s parent and…older sister.
Bernal, who has played similar roles in her long stint as a Kapuso star, navigates Riki effortlessly. While succeeding episodes are yet to showcase her capacity on taking on the role of a mentally-challenged woman with ease, the pilot episode alone, is a strong testament of her artistic versatility. Isabelle de Leon who has mostly teenybopper roles in ABS-CBN, has to prove herself more, and to her credit, she delivers a fine job.
