Movie Review: That Thing Called Tadhana

It’s okay if you have someone with you, helping you to recover from the recent heartbreak you previously had. And this is what the movie, “That Thing Called Tadhana” is all about.

It’s not the usual story we have watched from any romantic comedy movies. It introduced a new flavor of presentation to its audience.

The story started when Mace (portrayed by Angelica Panganiban) trying to unload some of the clothes from her excessive baggage but still she failed. A sincere co-passenger, Anthony (portrayed by JM de Guzman), offers a help to transfer some of her clothes to his luggage. Luckily after so many attempts, they get on board back to the Philippines.

This symbolism is very effective and perfect match to portray someone who have just lost a part of her life. No mattter how you tried to bring back the pieces, you just need to let it go. Let it fly or else let someone hold your excess burden and share your misery with until you recover from it.

Don’t want to go home yet, Mace and Anthony go to eat some food, just enough time to unravel their personalities on hook. She told him her love story, even admitted that she was deeply hurt after the 8-year relationship with her boyfriend turned blank. It all happened when she surprised to visit her long time Italy-based boyfriend only to find out the guy is cheating on her. She was only have one option and that is to move on and go back from where she’s rooted.

Meet a stranger and tell all your despair

Talking about her suffering and despair to an innocent stranger does help in releasing the tension and pain she feels inside.  Then, Anthony plainly throws the most hurtful , powerful and honest words to bumped her head on the wall, “You’re ex doesn’t love you anymore”.

Long time ago, Anthony was freed from heartaches and is now focusing on his career life but there’s an undying dream still remains in his heart. He was a Fine Arts graduate. He dreams of offering to the world his creative designs but settles only for an 8-hour working job. Oftentimes, he caught himself doing what clients dictate and demand but having no freedom of making his creation go wild.

It talks about chasing your dreams

Just like what Bo Sanchez said, don’t wait to belong in tombs of dead dreams where you were surrounded by dead people. Books that were never written. Songs that were not sung. Friendships that were not kindled. Businesses that were not launched. Ministries that were not started.

On the other hand, Mace made a short story when she was still in college called The Arrow with a Heart Pierced Through Him. Awed by her professor’s note that she should have shared this to the world, she thinks of writing it. Yet, in the middle of the story it’s just a thought by then.

That’s what you call “Fate”

It turned out that they aren’t just partner in mending each other’s heart but making it possible for them to be the best couple they can ever be — fulfilling their dreams together and loving each other deeply.

Here’s the short story about The Arrow with a Heart Pierced Through Him.

There was an arrow flying in the air, minding his own business, when he suddenly felt something heavy. To his surprise, there was a heart pierced through him.

“Where did you come from?” he asked.

But there was no reply.

He floated about, asking those along the way, “Have you lost your heart?”

But he couldn’t find the owner of this heart.

He decided to ignore the weight he was carrying by going back to doing what he was doing. He floated away carrying the weight of the heart.

As time passed, he felt the weight decrease. He was either getting used to the weight he was carrying or the heart was carrying itself. One day, the heart just slowly left the arrow. The arrow was glad because he was no longer carrying the heart that pierced through him. As he went about his way, he noticed that something was still weighing him down. The heart was no longer pierced through him, so he shouldn’t feel burdened at all. The arrow decided to move on and live life normally. But something was different. He realized that he was no longer the same arrow before the heart pierced through him. Something was missing, yet the arrow still flew about his way.

Until, he heard a familiar voice, “Have you lost your heart?”

It was from the heart that pierced through him.

The arrow didn’t reply, because he didn’t need to.

After their soul-searching session trip in Sagada, the two fly back to Manila. Mace’s boyfriend is patiently waiting in front of the house.

What did happen next? Take it from the last epilogue of Anthony.

“Kung mahal mo, habulin mo. ipaglaban mo. Huwag mong hintaying may magtulak sa kanya pabalik sa’yo. Hilahin mo.Hangga’t kaya mo,’wag kang bibitaw.”

Yes, he chased her … and the rest is in the book.
