- Rita Moreno filmed for a movie in the Philippines when she received news that she had a nomination for an Oscar.
- Pitoy Moreno (no relation) made her the timeless dress in just a few days.
- She wore it again in Oscars 2018.
EGOT awardee Rita Moreno returned to the Oscars red carpet. She also graced the red carpet wearing the exact same dress she wore in Oscars 1962. That same year, she also won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story.
Rita wore the dress on March 4 for the 90th Academy Awards with a few modifications.
In an interview with Ryan Seacrest for E! broadcast, she reminisced the day she won the award. Rita expressed how she thought it would be ruined after many years and then mentioned where the gown came from.
“I would think it would tarnish! I had no idea I was going to win, I was sure it was going to be Judy Garland for Judgment at Nuremberg. Flew in from Manila in the Philippines just in case, which is where this gown was made.”
Without any relation, legendary Filipino designer Pitoy Moreno actually designed Rita’s dress. Rita filmed a movie called Cry of Bataan when she heard that she has a nomination for an Oscar. Pitoy created her timeless gown in just a few days. He also made it with obi fabric usually used in Japanese kimonos.
Unfortunately, Pitoy already died in Jonuary 15, Monday. He was not able to see his creation grace the Oscars red carpet once again.
