Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque contradicted Mocha Uson’s claim that the People Power Revolution in 1986 was a product of fake news.
In a statement, Roque said that the 1986 bloodless revolution still remains a milestone in Philippine history which the government recognizes.
“So we still recognize and we will always recognize EDSA not only as an important historical event, but it was the first bloodless people power revolution in the whole entire planet earth, and it remains significant,” he said
Roque also said that it cannot be a fake news because it is being honored according to the law and that appropriation was being given for its commemoration.
“Well, according to the law, it is not fake news. According to the law, we honor the Edsa Revolution having declared it a public holiday. And of course, as I said earlier, we appropriated funds to commemorate the event,” Roque added.
The Malacanang spokesman’s statement came after PCOO Assitant Secretary Mocha Uson ran a Facebook pool regarding the 1986 People Power revolt.
In her Facebook page, Uson asked her followers if EDSA 1 is a product of fake news.
Meanwhile, although President Duterte skipped EDSA 1986 revolution twice in a row, Roque said that the President still values its significant and that there is no attempt by the government to downplay the occasion.
“There’s none. It remains in our statute books. As in fact, the ceremonies are being, well, spearheaded by the National Historical Commission no less,” Roque shared.
“The declaration of February 25 as a national holiday stays. It is a public holiday, and public funds are being spent to commemorate it. So I don’t think there should be any reason to deviate from the fact that by law and by practice, we celebrate EDSA because it was a historical event in our country.” he further explained.
