For students of the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UP Diliman), life in the campus is not complete unless they have eaten at the “Isawan ni Mang Larry” of Lauro Condencido Jr. Get to know the story of behind one of the most celebrated food places in the campus with Karen Davila this Tuesday (January 16) on “My Puhunan.
A native of Albay, Larry started out as a janitor in Manila before seeing an opportunity to sell “isaw” or the grilled intestine of a chicken or pig. With just P40 as capital, he ventured into setting up his own “isaw” business in 1984, using a stroller to go around the Diliman campus of UP.
Making sure that everything is all-natural and organic, Mang Larry saw his “isaw” become a hit with the UP community. His stroller would be upgraded into a makeshift wooden pushcart then later on a motorcycle, and then his own stall in UP as his business grew. Customers also began to arrive from outside UP, prompting him to open branches in branches at FEU Diliman, Maginhawa Street, and Visayas Avenue where they also offer a host of other delicacies.
