Riding Smart in the Heat: MDPPA’s Essential Tips for Summer Motorcycle Safety

From the excellent visibility to dry and clear roads, there are numerous ways the summer season can make motorcycle riding a total breeze. And while riding during the cooler times of day not only adds comfort but also helps save on fuel, summer brings the challenge of staying safe and cool under the intense heat of the sun.
To help our Tropang MAALAM riders cruise through the summer safely, we have listed down some essential tips on how they can beat the heat and protect themselves and their motorcycles during the warmer months.Stay hydrated

Dehydration can cause fatigue, dizziness, and poor concentration, which are dangerous for riders. Always bring a reusable water bottle and drink water regularly, especially during long rides. Consider hydration packs for convenience. If you’re riding for hours, take short breaks in shaded areas to cool off and rehydrate.

Wear Breathable, UV-Protective Gear

While it may be tempting to ride in lighter clothing, safety should never be compromised. Choose riding gear made from breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics that offer both ventilation and protection. Look for jackets, pants, and gloves with mesh panels, and always wear a full-face helmet with good airflow and a UV-tinted visor to shield your eyes from harmful sun exposure. Alternatively, wear sunglasses for eye comfort in the scorching heat.

Ride during cooler hours

Plan trips early in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are lower. Avoid mid-day rides when the sun is at its peak. Not only is it more comfortable, but it also reduces the risk of heatstroke and sunburn.

Be aware of the heat’s impact on your ride

Extreme heat can affect not just your body, but also your motorcycle’s performance. High temperatures can cause tire pressure to increase, which may lead to premature wear or even blowouts. Always check your tire pressure before and after a ride and adjust according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Engines are also more prone to overheating in hot weather, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Make sure your bike’s cooling system is in good condition. Also, check your coolant levels regularly and ensure that your radiator or cooling fins are clean and unobstructed.

Inspect and maintain your ride

Warm weather can speed up wear and tear. Before every trip, do a quick safety check of your tires, brakes, oil, lights, and chain tension, and don’t ignore warning signs like odd noises or fluctuating engine temperature. Regular maintenance is key to avoiding breakdowns in the heat.

Riding in the summer can be enjoyable and safe if you do it the Tropang MAALAM way! Through proper planning and awareness, you’ll be able to enjoy the open road while keeping yourself and your machine in peak condition!
