Kapuso news anchor Pia Arcangel recently shared a valuable lesson she learned from the late Mike Enriquez, particularly about salaries in the field of journalism.
During an interview on ‘Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,’ where she appeared alongside fellow journalist Ivan Mayrina, Arcangel recounted how Enriquez advised aspiring media practitioners not to focus on financial rewards when entering the industry.
The discussion stemmed from a question by Boy Abunda, who asked if journalists earn substantial salaries. Arcangel noted that this is a common inquiry from students and aspiring journalists, particularly during career talks.
“Many students ask about salaries, and some parents discourage their children from pursuing journalism because they believe it is not financially rewarding,” Arcangel said.
She then recalled an interview with Mike Enriquez, where the veteran broadcaster emphasized that passion for the profession should outweigh financial considerations.
“Sir Mike always said, ‘Huwag mo kasing iniisip kung magkano ang kikitain mo ‘pag pumasok ka dito sa trabahong ito,’” she shared.
Enriquez, known for his no-nonsense approach, would reportedly question applicants who inquired about salaries early in the hiring process.
“His usual question to applicants was: ‘Bakit mo ako tinatanong kung magkano ang kikitain mo? That’s a telling sign for me of how much you want to do this job. Kung pera agad ang iniisip mo, ‘wag na tayong mag-usap.’”
Arcangel emphasized that Enriquez believed those who entered journalism solely for financial gain would not last long in the industry.
“If we carry that mentality with us, we’ll stay in the industry. The reward will come later on,” she added.
Mike Enriquez, a veteran journalist and broadcaster, was known for his dedication to the truth and fearless reporting. His legacy continues to inspire journalists, particularly in prioritizing public service and integrity over financial gain.
