The romantic-comedy film ‘My Love Will Make You Disappear’ starring Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino scored a major box office win on its first day in cinemas, earning ₱12 million and claiming the highest opening day gross for a local film this year.
Directed by Chad Vidanes, the movie follows Sari (Chiu), a woman who believes that every man she falls in love with disappears, and Jolo (Avelino), a heartbroken man who sees her unusual “curse” as an opportunity to escape his own past.
The film also features an ensemble cast that includes Melai Cantiveros, Wilma Doesnt, Lovely Abella, Benj Manalo, Nico Antonio, Migs Almendras, Martin Escudero, Karina Bautista, Jeremiah Lisbo, Atasha Franco, Kelsey Lasam, and Lucas Andalio.
As of March 26, the film is showing in over 380 cinemas nationwide, following its initial rollout in 200 theaters. The movie is also set for international release in Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates beginning March 28.
After their guest appearance on ‘It’s Showtime’, Chiu and Avelino surprised fans by attending several block screenings organized across the country. Dressed in matching hoodies printed with their characters’ names, the lead stars personally thanked their supporters for organizing more than 200 block screenings nationwide.
“We truly appreciate it. We hope you enjoy the movie. I know it’s a Wednesday and some of you still have work, but you’re here. Maraming salamat po,” Avelino told the crowd.
“Nakakatuwa at nakakatanggal ng kaba kahit papaano, kasi ilang oras pa lang na pinapalabas ‘yung pelikula namin and ganito na ‘yung reception,” Chiu added.
Fans have also taken to social media to gush over the pair’s undeniable chemistry, especially during several romantic scenes that have since gone viral. Rumors even swirled that one of their kissing scenes extended beyond the director’s cue.
Chiu laughingly addressed the speculation: “Hindi ko narinig kung cut o hindi?” to which Avelino responded, “Kami naman ni Kim, sumusunod lang sa direktor at sa script.”
‘My Love Will Make You Disappear’ marks the first film team-up of Chiu and Avelino following their successful pairing in the series ‘Linlang’ and the Philippine remake of ‘What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim’.
