In a recent interview, Concert King Martin Nievera shared his insights on the changing landscape of fame and the crucial role his iconic Sunday noontime musical variety show, “ASAP,” has played in the rise of emerging talents over the years.
As the show celebrates its 30th anniversary, Nievera emphasized how the show has been a significant platform for aspiring artists long before the advent of social media.
“It sounds easy now dahil sa social media. Madali ngayon eh,” Nievera remarked, pointing out the advantages that today’s aspiring stars experience in gaining instant visibility through platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
He contrasted this digital ease with the past, stating, “Pero back then, wala kaming social media, wala kaming TikTok, wala kang Facebook, o Instagram. None of that existed. Back then, you really had to promote hard.”
The Concert King further elaborated on the dedication required to become a sensation, highlighting that success during the early years was predominantly achieved through hard work and consistent performances on “ASAP.” “You really had to study your songs. You became a sensation, a superstar by coming out on ASAP, not social media,” he said, underscoring the show’s pivotal role in talent promotion.
Nievera noted that achieving stardom was not an overnight success but rather the culmination of “many, many Sundays of hard work, of promos, until sisikat ka or hindi. Depende sayo.” His reflections highlighted how regular exposure on the noontime show had the power to build dedicated audiences and solidify an artist’s place in the industry.
As a pioneering performer on “ASAP,” Nievera’s experiences illustrate the program’s legacy in shaping the careers of countless artists.
With its status as the longest-running musical variety show on Philippine television, “ASAP” remains a cornerstone for nurturing new talents, proving that while the paths to fame may have evolved, the essence of hard work and dedication continues to hold true.
