Kapamilya actor Anthony Jennings is set to make his international film debut as the lead star of the upcoming horror-comedy-drama ‘Mother Maybe’.
The film was officially announced at Hong Kong FilMart 2025, as first reported by Variety.
Jennings will portray Marco, a young man who reunites with his long-lost mother under unusual circumstances—during a high-stakes Asian game show. However, what begins as a heartfelt reunion quickly turns into something terrifying when Marco discovers that his mother transforms into something monstrous at night.
The film is directed by Filipino filmmaker Sonny Calvento, known for his work in socially conscious and boundary-pushing cinema. According to Calvento, the film is deeply personal, drawing from his own childhood experiences.
“My family deviates from the traditional close-knit Filipino structure. My mother left when I was two, and talking about her was forbidden at home. At its heart, this film is my tribute to my mother. A monster separates us, but perhaps, through this story, I can bring us closer again,” the director shared.
Calvento expressed excitement about Jennings taking on the lead role, highlighting the actor’s natural talent for balancing comedy and drama.
“Anthony has this natural charm that makes him so easy to watch. He can make you laugh one moment and make you cry the next, which is exactly what this role demands. This balance of comedic timing and emotional depth makes him the right fit for Marco,” said Calvento.
‘Mother Maybe’ is an ambitious project co-produced by Southern Lantern Studios (Philippines), E&W Films (Singapore), and Volos Films Ltd. (Taiwan). The film has already gained international recognition, having won prestigious awards such as: TAICCA Development Grant at Full Circle Lab Philippines, TAICCA x CNC Award for Best Project and MPA Grand Award at Taiwan Creative Content Fest 2023.
Production is scheduled to begin in late 2025, with further casting details yet to be announced.
Anthony Jennings has quickly established himself as a versatile and charismatic actor. He gained recognition for his role as Snoop Manansala in Can’t Buy Me Love and is currently making waves in ABS-CBN’s action-thriller series Incognito.
His recent film, ‘Sosyal Climbers’, alongside Maris Racal, continues to perform well, ranking among the Top 10 movies on Netflix Philippines.
