‘Everything About My Wife’, takes audiences on a familiar yet relatable journey through the ups and downs of married life.
A collaborative effort by GMA Pictures, CreaZion Studios, and Glimmer Studio Philippines, and director Real Florido, at the helm, the film features real-life couple Dennis Trillo and Jennylyn Mercado, in the lead, alongside singer-actor, Sam Milby. The film delivers a heartwarming perspective on love, commitment, and the many eye-opening challenges that put relationships under extreme pressure.
The film focuses its lens on Dominic (Trillo), who finds himself at a crossroads in his marriage to Imogen (Mercado). Fed up with his wife’s constant nagging and his desire to escape the responsibilities that come with being a husband, he enlists the help of local casanova, Miguel (Milby) to push Imo to demand separation. This complicated plan bears undesirable consequences, spiraling into an unfamiliar emotional territory as the characters try to balance out their conflicting aspirations.
Rona Co’s screenplay offers a wonderful mix of fun-filled moments and profound themes, shining thoroughly in both territories through eloquent storytelling. It particularly soars in depicting the strains of unfulfilled dreams to marriage, like the couple’s struggle with infertility, which impacts their husband-wife connection. Mercado shines in her role, putting her range as an actress front and center, and coming out impeccably in both the comic and dramatic moments of Imo. Trillo’s portrayal of a conflicted husband furthers the depth of the narrative, proving his unquestionable expertise in drama, although he delivers spectacularly in the role’s comedic efforts, as well. Milby, with his screaming leading man’s charisma, adds both humor and tension to the dynamic.
Cebu City is rendered in its panoramic glory in the film, providing an exquisite backdrop to the unfolding drama that places Dom and Imo, under the spotlight. The cinematography provides a vibrant essence and underscores the location’s magnetic charm.
While it’s true, “Everything About My Wife” bears the formulaic mold of traditional Pinoy romcoms, it succeeds in blending elements of its original Korean and Argentine materials with Filipino sensibilities, making it a relatable ride for moviegoers. That said, the predictability of the plot may come off to some and can be a slight inconvenience to those wanting to completely enjoy the film.
In conclusion, the film is an enjoyable trip through marital struggles, finding strength and beauty in its cast’s effective performances and the comedic bits wonderfully sprinkled all throughout the film.
Though it may not easily impress the seasoned fans of the genre, it nevertheless triumphs in capturing the heart and humor of relationships, making it a standout entry to the ever-expanding romcom pantheon.
