Comedian and TV host Boobay has addressed a years-old incident with actress Karen Delos Reyes, which occurred during a taping of GMA Network’s reality show ‘Extra Challenge’.
The misunderstanding, which arose after Boobay mispronounced Karen’s last name, sparked tension between the two at the time.
During his guest appearance on ‘Fast Talk with Boy Abunda’ on Friday, February 7, Boobay revisited the incident, explaining the context of what happened and how it was eventually resolved.
Boobay, who was then a relatively new TV host, mistakenly introduced Karen as “Karen Delos Santos” instead of “Karen Delos Reyes.” The actress, known for her role in a famous commercial where her grandfather hilariously mixed up her name, reacted negatively, causing tension on set.
Boobay clarified that the name error was intended as a lighthearted callback to Karen’s well-known TV ad.
“Ang ginawa ko, parang fineed ko lang siya dun sa apelyido niya kasi ‘di ba sumikat siya sa commercial na ‘yung lolo niya, nagkamali sa pangalan niya—‘Gina, Karen,’ ganiyan. So ako, tinry ko naman na i-feed siya sa apelyido naman. So ang ine-expect ko na sasabihin niya, ‘Delos Reyes po,’” Boobay explained.
However, Karen did not pick up on the joke, which led to an awkward confrontation.
Boobay revealed that he was initially upset by Karen’s reaction but chose to remain composed. He credited Marian Rivera, who was present during the shoot, for calming him down.
“Pinipigilan ako ni Yanyan (Marian Rivera), ‘Ano ka lang, kalmado ka lang,’” Boobay shared, adding that he wanted to stand his ground but ultimately decided to keep the peace.
The incident left a significant impression on Boobay, especially since it was his first major project on TV.
Despite the misunderstanding, Boobay emphasized that there are no lingering hard feelings between him and Karen. In fact, the two have since become good friends.
“Okay na kami ni Karen ngayon,” Boobay assured. He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and grow from the experience.
The resolution of the issue highlights how showbiz personalities can overcome misunderstandings and maintain professionalism in the industry. Boobay remains one of GMA Network’s prominent comedic hosts, co-leading ‘The Boobay and Tekla Show’. Meanwhile, Karen Delos Reyes continues to thrive in her career, taking on various roles in television and advertising.
