Vice Ganda has spoken out against alleged attempts to derail the success of his Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2024 entry ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ after it dominated the box office during the festival’s opening week.
During the January 2 episode of ‘It’s Showtime’, Vice’s co-hosts Vhong Navarro, Kim Chiu, and Ogie Alcasid congratulated him on the movie’s phenomenal reception, praising his performance and celebrating its current box office success.
Vice, who was visibly emotional, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support the film has received, sharing how he woke up to positive reviews on Christmas Day.
“Nakakatuwa, sobra. Pagising ko noong December 25, naiyak ako kasi generally, majority positive reviews. Sobrang ganda ng mga sinasabi kaya dumagsa talaga ang mga tao sa sinehan,” Vice shared.
Despite the positive feedback, Vice revealed that negative reviews started surfacing on December 28, which he attributed to a deliberate effort to sabotage the film’s success.
“Biglang dumami ang negative posts noong December 28. Alam mong may demolition job. Pero hindi nila napatay ang mga organic posts ng mga totoong nakapanood,” Vice noted.
He highlighted the authenticity of the audience reactions, many of whom shared emotional videos on social media after watching the film.
“Maraming salamat kasi sobrang ingay ng mga totoong nakapanood at naka-relate. This is the most relatable family movie this year,” Vice added.
Industry data confirmed that ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ led the box office on its opening day, with pre-sales and receipts surpassing its competitors. The film earned twice as much as ‘The Kingdom’, starring Vic Sotto and Piolo Pascual, which secured the second spot.
By December 30, reports indicated that Vice’s film had reached nine-digit earnings, making it the only MMFF entry to achieve this feat so far.
While the movie received acclaim for its humor and heartfelt storytelling, Vice’s team observed the spread of false narratives, such as claims of cinema pullouts and negative feedback from viewers who allegedly hadn’t watched the film.

Despite the controversy, ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ has been lauded by fans and critics for its fresh approach to comedy and its emotionally resonant family-centered plot.
During the episode, Kim Chiu referred to Vice Ganda as her ‘Best Actor,’ reflecting the admiration that many fans have expressed online.
As the New Year unfolds, ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ continues to dominate the MMFF 2024 box office, maintaining its top position among the 10 official entries.
