Iconic figure in Philippine cinema and television Gloria Romero has passed away at the age of 91.
Her family confirmed the news on Saturday, January 25.
Romero’s daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, announced that the veteran actress died peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. The wake is being held at Arlington Memorial Chapel in Quezon City.
“In this time of loss, our family deeply appreciates the support, prayers, and heartfelt condolences that we’ve received,” Gutierrez shared on social media. “She will surely be missed dearly.”
Known as the “First Lady of Philippine Cinema,” Gloria Romero’s career spanned nearly eight decades, during which she starred in over 250 films and television shows. She earned numerous accolades, including multiple Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards from FAMAS, the Film Academy of the Philippines, and the Gawad Urian Awards.
Romero rose to prominence in the 1952 film ‘Madame X’, and her role in ‘Dalagang Ilocana’ (1954) won her first FAMAS Best Actress award. Some of her most memorable works include ‘Nagbabagang Luha’ (1988), ‘Tanging Yaman’ (2000), ‘Magnifico’ (2003), and ‘Rainbow’s Sunset’ (2018).
In television, Romero became a beloved presence, captivating audiences with her grace and unparalleled talent. Her performances resonated across generations, solidifying her status as a timeless icon in Philippine entertainment.
Romero celebrated her 90th birthday in February 2024 with a grand tribute attended by fellow actors and industry luminaries. The event highlighted her unparalleled contributions to film and television.
Born Gloria Anne Borrego Galla, Romero began her journey in the entertainment industry in the 1940s, quickly becoming one of the most respected and celebrated stars in the Philippines.
She is survived by her daughter Maritess and grandson Chris Gutierrez. Her niece, Lovely Rivero II, also paid tribute to the late actress, writing, “Rest well, our Movie Queen. Praying for the repose of your soul and for strength for the family during this very difficult time.”
Romero’s legacy as a pioneer and icon in Philippine cinema will continue to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.
