Star Cinema’s ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ has cemented its position as the top-grossing entry of the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), significantly outpacing its competitors.
The film, marking Vice Ganda’s highly anticipated return to the big screen, has reportedly surpassed nine digits in earnings—making it the only MMFF film to achieve this milestone so far.
As of December 30, industry sources indicate that ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ has amassed three times the earnings of its closest rival, ‘The Kingdom’, starring Vic Sotto and Piolo Pascual. While ‘The Kingdom’ holds the second spot, its total revenue only accounts for 30% of the leading film’s earnings.
Initially, ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ earned double that of ‘The Kingdom’ on opening day, but its lead has widened further over the festival’s first week.
Trailing behind in third to fifth positions are ‘Espantaho’, ‘Green Bones’, and ‘Uninvited’, whose box office figures are in close competition.
The overwhelming success of ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ can be attributed to its relatable storyline and unique humor, which have received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. The film, described as a comedic gem with a fresh approach, has resonated deeply with Filipino families who find its narrative reflective of their own experiences.
Vice Ganda took to Twitter to express gratitude for the loyal support of his fans: “Maraming nagtatanong kung bakit maraming pumipila sa mga pelikula ko lalo na tuwing Pasko. Ito po ang sagot. This year’s MMFF lineup showcases a variety of genres, celebrating its golden anniversary with the theme “Sinesigla sa Singkwenta.”
Other notable entries include: ‘Green Bones’, A riveting action-thriller, ‘Isang Himala’, A drama exploring faith and resilience, ‘Uninvited’, A psychological suspense story, ‘Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital’, A horror film for fans of the genre.
Running from December 25, 2024, to January 7, 2025, the MMFF continues its tradition of celebrating Filipino creativity and storytelling. Organized by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the festival has been a cultural touchstone for 50 years.
