Since Vice Ganda made his film debut with ‘Petrang Kabayo’ in 2010 and entered the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) with ‘Sisterakas’ in 2012, his movies have consistently dominated the box office.
Over the years, his films have become a Christmas tradition for families, offering heartwarming and humorous stories perfect for the season. Despite not often receiving MMFF awards, his movies remain the top choice for moviegoers.
This 2024, Vice Ganda returned to the MMFF with ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’, showcasing a unique storyline while retaining his signature comedic flair. Even before the festival officially opened, the film had already racked up millions in pre-sales, and once the screenings began, it soared to the top of the box office. Reports suggest it is miles ahead of the second-placer, ‘The Kingdom‘.
The momentum grew more after Vice Ganda received the Special Jury Prize during the MMFF awards night. The recognition led to more number of cinemas showing his film, further boosting its earnings.
But one question has lingered for years: Why do so many people flock to Vice Ganda’s movies? The comedian finally addressed this in a heartfelt tweet.
“Maraming nagtatanong kung bakit maraming pumipila sa mga pelikula ko lalo na tuwing Pasko. Ito po ang sagot. Dahil po ako at ang masa ay may ugnayan. May relasyon. Nagkakaunawaan kami. Nagmamahalan. Iisa ang lenggwahe namin. Iisa ang pulso. Nagkakaintindihan. Kaya’t di namin iniiwan ang isa’t isa anuman ang mangyari,” Vice Ganda shared.
He added, “‘Yan ang karangalan na patuloy kong tinatanggap mula sa kanila noon pa man hanggang ngayon. Karangalang di lang pang isang gabi. Pangmatagalan. Yan din ang dahilan kung bakit maraming nakarelate sa And The Breadwinner Is…. Dahil totoong istorya nila ito. Kwento ng aming mga pamilya. Masa ang nagbibigay sakin ng tagumpay. Sila ang pamilya ko. Kaya sa masa labis labis ang pagmamahal at pasasalamat ko!”
