Theater actor and screen star Topper Fabregas takes the lead in Vivamax’s latest VMX anthology installment, ‘My Boyfriend Is a Sex Worker.’
Part of the Open Secrets series, this project explores the complex dynamics of love, family, and societal judgment through the lens of the LGBTQIA+ experience.
Fabregas is joined by an ensemble cast, including Kurt Kendrick, Marnie Lapus, Adrienne Vergara, Robert Jbeili, Timothy Tuppil, and Omar Flores. The two-part drama premieres its first episode on December 6 via VMX pay-per-view.
The film follows Ace Mendoza, played by Fabregas, a gay man from an affluent family who appears to have it all: academic honors, a successful career, and the unwavering pride of his family. However, his world is upended when he introduces his boyfriend Gio, portrayed by Kurt Kendrick.
While Gio initially wins over Ace’s family with his charm, they soon discover his controversial profession as a sex worker and adult content creator. This revelation sparks conflict, particularly with Ace’s mother, Angelica (Marnie Lapus), who is determined to end their relationship.
The story explores whether Ace and Gio’s love can withstand the pressures of societal expectations and familial opposition.
At a press conference for the film, Fabregas shared insights into the challenges of performing intimate scenes for the camera. Known for his roles in theater productions like ‘The Normal Heart’ and ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo,’ Fabregas noted the differences between stage and screen.
“Sa stage, I’ve already portrayed sex onstage—not naman super nudity but sex in different ways so I’m not too unfamiliar with that pero sa stage kasi, we do it tapos that’s it. No one really gets to watch it back or go back to it so you really just stay at the moment,” he explained. “I guess for this, ’yun ’yung initial fear ko kasi forever na siya. But, I just realized that portraying intimate scenes on film, it’s the same because it’s so physical so you really have to act with your whole body and sa film kasi, you don’t get to do that all the time, eh. Usually, close-up siya and, you know, sa stage talaga you just kind of go for it.”
“Medyo nakakatakot lang kasi you’re always thinking at the back of your head. I mean, tao lang naman ako, medyo vain din naman ako na iniisip ko na, ‘Will I look okay?’ at the end of the day. That’s my only fear. The rest, it’s work. Work lang siya,” he added.
Fabregas also emphasized his commitment to his craft, saying, “At the end of the day, it’s work. I focus on the role and what the story requires.”
‘My Boyfriend Is a Sex Worker’ is more than a love story; it’s a bold commentary on the intersections of identity, love, and societal norms. It continues Vivamax’s tradition of spotlighting underrepresented narratives and pushing the boundaries of contemporary storytelling.
The second part of the series is set to follow soon, promising an emotionally charged conclusion to this groundbreaking tale. Fans can catch the premiere exclusively on VMX pay-per-view.
