One of the standout entries of the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ explores the trials and triumphs of being a breadwinner.
Directed by Jun Robles Lana, known for critically acclaimed films like ‘Barber’s Tales’ and ‘Die Beautiful’, the movie balances comedy and drama to deliver a relatable and heartfelt narrative.
Vice Ganda stars as Bambi, a devoted breadwinner navigating the pressures of family and responsibility. While the role calls for a more serious approach, Vice retains her trademark humor, especially in the film’s first half. Her natural comedic chemistry with MC Muah and Lassy Marquez ensures laugh-out-loud moments that fans will undoubtedly enjoy.
However, it’s in the second half of the film that Vice begins to showcase a deeper, more nuanced performance. Though the movie is marketed as a showcase of a “different” side of the comedian, the shift isn’t as groundbreaking as suggested. Still, it’s refreshing to see Vice navigate heavier themes with a touch of sincerity.
The film delves into the emotional and financial sacrifices of breadwinners, a narrative thread that many viewers will find deeply relatable. One of the most impactful lines, “Sino ba ang nagpauso na kapag breadwinner, dapat isa lang?” encapsulates the film’s core message, resonating with audiences who understand the weight of such responsibilities.
The transition into more dramatic storytelling is further elevated by Eugene Domingo’s portrayal of Baby, Bambi’s older sister. Domingo’s grounded performance provides a strong counterbalance to Vice’s comedic energy, adding depth to the family dynamics at play.
A Strong Ending. The film’s highlight is undoubtedly its emotional climax, accompanied by SB19’s hit song ‘Mapa.’ The music elevates the film’s final moments, offering a poignant tribute to breadwinners everywhere. While the choice of song is perfect for the film’s tone, integrating it earlier could have amplified its emotional impact.
Strengths and Weaknesses. The movie’s first half leans heavily on comedy, with some scenes feeling like filler, which affects the pacing. This imbalance causes the resolution to feel rushed, as conflicts aren’t given enough time to develop fully. Additionally, some jokes are misplaced, breaking the emotional flow of critical moments.
There are also instances where dramatic monologues feel overindulgent, particularly during Bambi’s confrontation with her family. These moments, while well-acted, detract from the relatability of the narrative.
The supporting cast shines, with Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings (known as MaThon) delivering memorable performances and undeniable chemistry despite limited screen time. Jhong Hilario convincingly plays the “pabigat” sibling, though his character could have benefited from more development. Meanwhile, Gladys Reyes excels as the meddling in-law, adding tension and authenticity to the family dynamics.
Malou de Guzman’s portrayal of Bambi’s mother with Alzheimer’s provides the film’s most heartfelt moment. Her performance, combined with Vice’s sincerity in these scenes, elevates the film’s emotional weight.
LionhearTV‘s verdict. ‘And The Breadwinner Is…’ is a heartwarming blend of comedy and drama, anchored by Vice Ganda’s charisma and a strong supporting cast. While it stumbles in pacing and consistency, the film’s relatable themes and emotional ending make it a worthy addition to MMFF 2024.
For Vice’s fans, the film offers the familiar humor they adore, coupled with a touch of depth. For casual viewers, it’s a touching tribute to breadwinners and the sacrifices they make for their families.
