Kapuso actress Rhian Ramos has publicly addressed accusations that she and her boyfriend, Sam Verzosa, cheated during the 2024 New York City Marathon.
The couple completed the 42-km race in support of Smile Train, a global charity for children with cleft conditions.
While their accomplishment was initially met with praise, online speculation arose when some observers noted missing data in their race tracker at the 18.6, 20, and 21.7-mile markers, leading to rumors about the legitimacy of their finish.
In response, Rhian posted a video on Instagram, showcasing highlights from the marathon, including footage of the couple at the 20-mile marker. She also included an official email from the marathon organizers, which confirmed that the tracker discrepancies were due to technical errors, and that both Rhian and Sam were listed as official finishers.
Rhian used the caption to emphasize the importance of fact-checking, saying, “I understand that a lot of people think ‘chismis’ is fun, and it’s so easy to make something up just to get 15 minutes of fame… But in 2024, it’s so easy to send an email, verify facts, and get your story straight before trying to ruin someone’s name for a little attention -especially when it’s your job to do so.” She highlighted the responsibility of media and others in avoiding the spread of misinformation, especially when it involves reputational harm.
Reflecting on her marathon experience, Rhian explained that while it was her first full marathon, she was determined to finish for the benefit of the charity. “We didn’t do it to compete with anyone’s times. We just had to make sure we could finish it without passing out or getting injured because, above everything, we were doing it for charity,” she said, adding that the cause motivated them even through difficult moments.
Rhian ended her post by encouraging her followers to remain vigilant against fake news, stating, “I’d like to use this moment to encourage you that if we could do this, you can do anything ! …and also it’s a reminder that liars and fake news are everywhere! And even if ‘chismis’ is fun,’ the truth can be fun too.”
