REVIEW: ‘Moana 2,’ a visually stunning sequel with emotional depth but missing musical magic

Disney’s ‘Moana 2’ takes audiences back to the dazzling world of the Pacific, delivering breathtaking animation and a heartfelt story of love, sacrifice, and responsibility. While the sequel manages to evoke powerful emotions, it falls short in areas where its predecessor excelled—most notably, the music.

Set three years after Moana’s original journey, the sequel explores her life as an older sibling. Her relationship with her younger sister, Simea, serves as the emotional heart of the film. The story delves into the sacrifices required to protect and guide loved ones, with Moana’s character evolving into a selfless leader who puts her family’s needs above her own.

The film’s emotional depth is its strongest suit. Moana’s sacrifices resonate, particularly in moments that highlight the quiet but profound ways we support our families. These heartfelt scenes had audiences visibly moved, with sniffles heard throughout theaters during the most poignant moments.

The visuals are nothing short of spectacular. Disney’s animators have outdone themselves, creating lush, immersive landscapes that make every frame a feast for the eyes. Whether it’s the glistening ocean waves or the intricate details of island life, the film captures the natural beauty of the Pacific in stunning detail.

Unfortunately, ‘Moana 2’ doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor when it comes to music. With Lin-Manuel Miranda absent, the new songwriting team of Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear delivers a serviceable but forgettable soundtrack. While the songs are emotionally fitting, none stand out as anthems or leave a lasting impression.

The plot, while heartfelt, feels somewhat predictable and lacks the adventurous spark of the original. The absence of a compelling villain and relatively low stakes further weaken the story’s impact. Some parts of the film feel like a rehash of the first movie, with less innovation and fewer memorable moments.

LionhearTV‘s verdict: ‘Moana 2’ is a visually stunning film that tugs at the heartstrings with its exploration of family bonds and sacrifice. While it doesn’t capture the musical magic or narrative originality of the original, it remains a worthwhile watch for fans of the first movie and families seeking an emotional, holiday-friendly film.

Rating: 3/5. If you’re looking for a film that will make you laugh, cry, and marvel at its beauty, ‘Moana 2’ is worth a trip to the theater—even if it doesn’t quite sail into uncharted waters.
