Kapamilya Primetime King Coco Martin has shared the secrets to the phenomenal success of ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,’ along with his work ethic and the strict rules he implements on set, during an exclusive interview with showbiz reporter Ogie Diaz.
Coco, who not only stars in the show but also works as its director, conceptualizer, producer, and scriptwriter, attributed his boundless energy and dedication to the fulfillment he finds in his work.
Despite his numerous responsibilities, Coco admitted that he draws happiness from his craft. “Siguro meron akong nakukuhang happiness and fulfillment,” he said.
The multi-hyphenate actor described ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’ as less stressful compared to his previous long-running hit ‘FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.’ He explained that experience has taught him to manage expectations better while still maintaining a high level of production quality.
When asked about the incredible longevity of his primetime series, Coco offered an unconventional insight: “Ang ‘Probinsyano’ at ‘Batang Quiapo,’ wala kasi siyang kwento. Kaya kahit saan ko siya dalhin, sinasalo lang ng viewers.”
Unlike traditional teleseryes with fixed narratives, Coco explained that his shows are designed to adapt to audience preferences. By keeping the storyline flexible, he allows the series to evolve, ensuring that it remains relevant and engaging over time.
Coco is known for his strict yet fair rules on set, which he says are essential to maintaining professionalism and ensuring the success of the show.
- No phone use during filming. Phones are only permitted during breaks and in designated areas.
- Uniform dress code. Coco requires all staff to wear uniforms to foster professionalism and represent the production company.
- Better treatment for talents. Drawing from his own experience, he ensures that all talents, regardless of their role, are provided with proper tents, chairs, tables, and separate portable toilets.
- Mandatory drug tests. To maintain a safe and professional work environment, all staff and artists are subject to drug testing.
“Kung seryoso ka at mahal mo ang trabaho mo, aalagaan mo ’yon at iingatan mo,” he said, emphasizing that anyone testing positive for drugs is asked to take a leave until they have recovered.
In ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,’ Coco continues his tradition of giving opportunities to aspiring and returning talents, as he did in ‘FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano.’
One notable example is Rod Navarro Jr., son of the late director Rod Navarro, who approached Coco for a role. Impressed by Rod Jr.’s determination and work ethic, Coco cast him as Dindo, a key ally of Olga, played by Irma Adlawan.
“Ang hinihingi mo sa akin trabaho, hindi pera. Kung trabaho ang gusto mo, hindi kita makakalimutan kasi at least iniisip mo na may gusto kang mangyari sa buhay mo,” Coco shared, explaining his willingness to provide work to those who show initiative.
With his hands-on approach and dedication to uplifting Philippine television, Coco Martin has cemented his status as one of the industry’s most respected figures. His unwavering commitment to excellence has made ‘FPJ’s Batang Quiapo’ a primetime juggernaut, while his passion for helping others underscores his legacy as a true leader in entertainment.
