Comedienne Aiai delas Alas recently confirmed her separation from husband Gerald Sibayan after nearly a decade of marriage, addressing their split in an interview on ‘Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.’
In the emotional interview, Aiai shared that the two parted ways in October, following a message from Gerald that led her to believe he was no longer happy in their relationship. Aiai, who celebrated her 60th birthday this week, noted the significant age gap between her and Gerald, acknowledging that she had always prepared herself for the possibility that it might affect their marriage.
When asked by Boy Abunda if a third party might have been involved, Aiai admitted she had a strong suspicion. “Bilang asawa ‘di ba ang mga asawa malalakas ang… [pakiramdam]? Ako, ramdam ko meron. Ramdam ko. Gut feel,” she said. However, she clarified that discovering the specifics was no longer important, as Gerald had clearly decided to move on.
Explaining her decision not to fight for the marriage, Aiai expressed the importance of maintaining her self-respect. “Kapag lumaban pa kasi ako, kunyari nag-stay ako, alam ko naman ang magiging ending. Yung dignity at self-worth ko, mawawala na ‘yon,” she shared.
Aiai also revealed that Gerald had been unfaithful in the past, leading to lingering trust issues. Reflecting on the relationship, she admitted that while she had always hoped their love would overcome challenges, she was aware that Gerald’s youth might influence his long-term commitment. “Alam ko na bata pa si Gerald baka magbago yung isip. Pero alam mo yung, ‘Sana huwag. Sana totoong may forever. Sana binigyan talaga ako ni Lord ng pagkakataon na magkaroon ng maganda, matagal na pag-aasawa,” she said.
Although she anticipated the possibility of separation someday, Aiai admitted she didn’t expect it to happen this soon. “Akala ko, kapag 35 years old na siya [makikipaghiwalay]. Ito na pala ‘yon,” she remarked.
Since their last conversation, Aiai and Gerald have not spoken, with the actress sensing that he has firmly decided to move on. Despite the heartbreak, Aiai expressed her hope that Gerald finds happiness and success in his own path. “Alam na niya ngayon how to fly. Parang kasi dati, ako yung nagmamaniobra, kasi ako talaga yung medyo matanda sa kaniya. So ngayon, mayroon na siyang karapatan to fly, nagwo-work na siya. Nandoon na siya sa Amerika,” she shared.
