On her 60th birthday, Aiai delas Alas opened up about her recent split from husband Gerald Sibayan in an emotional interview on ‘Fast Talk with Boy Abunda’ on November 11, leaving fans shocked by the revelations.
The comedy queen disclosed that her decade-long relationship with Gerald came to an abrupt end on October 14, 2024, when she received a message from him through Messenger, informing her that he wanted to end their marriage.
According to Aiai, Gerald expressed a desire to have children and admitted he was no longer happy in the relationship.
One of the hardest aspects of the breakup for Aiai was that Gerald chose to end things remotely rather than waiting for her return to the United States for a face-to-face discussion. The couple’s love story, which began when Aiai was 50 and Gerald was 20, had defied a 30-year age gap. They married in 2017 and even tried to have children through IVF, though their efforts were unsuccessful.
Aiai’s three adult children—Sancho, Nicolo, and Sofia—were supportive of her relationship with Gerald, prioritizing her happiness and witnessing the joy he brought into her life. Now, nearly a month after the separation, Aiai admitted that she is still processing the end of her marriage, especially given its decade-long duration.
In the interview, Aiai hinted that a third party may have contributed to the split, noting that Gerald had previously been unfaithful, which left lingering trust issues. She also reflected on how her frequent travels between the Philippines and the U.S., where Gerald now resides, might have affected their relationship.
The split marks Aiai’s fourth highly publicized breakup. Her previous relationships include the late Rey Malte-Cruz, father of her eldest son Sancho; singer-actor Miguel Vera, father of her children Nicolo and Sofia; and non-showbiz personality Jed Salang, from whom she separated just a month after marrying.
Despite the heartbreak, Aiai is determined to focus on her career and move forward. Known for her resilience, the actress shared that she is choosing to remember the happier moments with Gerald. With ongoing projects in the Philippines, Aiai plans to spend more time in the country and remains under the management of Boy Abunda, whom she considers a father figure.
