In a season marked by anticipation for the upcoming 2025 elections, GMA Network’s “Balota” has emerged as a runaway success – capturing the hearts and minds of moviegoers across the country.
Since its theatrical release four weeks ago, the film produced by GMA Pictures, GMA Entertainment Group and Kip Oebanda has been lauded for its powerful portrayal of the critical role teachers play in preserving democratic integrity.
Headlined by Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera, “Balota” likewise sparked discussions on good citizenship, democracy, and elections.
The film, written and directed by Kip Oebanda, gave another perspective on what a film should deliver when it carries important advocacy – making every scene relatable to moviegoers. From the old-fashioned catchy jingles to cliché promises of running officials but also giving justice to the importance of the voices of the masses in society.
A showcase of Marian Rivera’s acting mettle
Rivera’s stellar performance as Teacher Emmy in “Balota” solidified her position as a versatile actress.
Known for her award-winning performances in family drama series and movies, Rivera’s portrayal of her character in Balota was lauded by moviegoers and film critics.
“Raw, powerful, and brave. Compelling performance from Marian,” National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee said.
“Marian has already proven her Box office power but I pray she’ll keep doing these kind(s) of projects from time to time. It’s in Her. Directors and Producers should not cease on Doing projects to extract the ACTRESS in Marian Rivera,” award-winning actor John Arcilla shared in his post.
“Marian Rivera is great… the hero this movie, nay, maybe this nation needs,” seasoned film critic and writer Philbert Dy emphasized in his film review.
“Marian Rivera’s portrayal of a strong yet conflicted character is commendable. Her performance brings out both the vulnerability and determination of someone caught in the middle of a flawed system. As expected, Marian delivers with grace and intensity,” said teacher Paul Pascual.
Amid these praises, the Kapuso actress chose to honor the teachers—whom she regards as the real heroes in real life.
“Para sa kanila itong kuwento na ito. Inaalay natin sa lahat ng teachers talaga,” Rivera said.
Those who were able to watch the film were reminded again of the importance of suffrage and of giving importance to those who risk their lives to protect their votes.
“Ang maganda niyan, habang nanonood sila, may realization sila na, ‘Ah, ganito pala talaga,’ so parang dahil sa ‘Balotang’ ito, parang pag-iisipan nila kung paano sila boboto nang tama at dapat,” Rivera shared.
Rivera made countless movie-goers laugh and cry, and with ‘Balota’ she made everyone believe that there is hope and power amid the struggle and danger.
Balota as a film stood out among other films released in the same month, also because of the remarkable performances of the cast, which included Gardo Versoza, Will Ashley, Raheel Bhyria, Royce Cabrera, Sassa Gurl, Esnyr, Nico Antonio, Donna Cariaga, Joel Saracho, Sue Prado, Mae Paner. Each actor delivered an exceptional portrayal of every character that made Balota’s advocacy leave a mark on everyone who watched it.
With Balota’s undeniable success, GMA Network—through GMA Pictures—has further reignited the magic of local cinema. Moviegoers can only expect more quality films as GMA Pictures rolls out more movie offerings in the future.
