The Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) has taken a major step toward elevating fan engagement by partnering with Daily Fantasy, the Philippines’ first fantasy sports platform.
Announced during a press conference on October 15 at Fairmont Makati, the collaboration will provide MPBL fans with a unique way to connect with the league by allowing them to create their own fantasy teams.
“We aim not only to provide our users with more ways to enjoy local sports but also to elevate the experience for loyal MPBL fans and add a deeper connection to the league,” said Carlos Molina, Daily Fantasy’s marketing manager.
Starting with the 2024 season, the partnership will bring a fresh level of excitement to MPBL games, enabling fans to build their own teams, select their favorite players, and compete in fantasy sports. The concept, similar to the popular fantasy leagues for the NBA, adds an interactive element to MPBL matchups, giving fans the chance to act as virtual coaches.
Key features of the platform include a 10-minute adjustment window before each game, daily tasks to earn rewards, and an AP Level system for player progression. Users can also select team captains and vice-captains, who can earn extra points based on their performances during live MPBL matches.
“This will significantly boost the MPBL’s popularity as it brings the excitement of the game to fans nationwide and engage the sports enthusiasts who are also strategists,” Molina added.
Daily Fantasy allows users to participate in both free and paid games, with in-game currency called “rubies” or cash prizes for successful strategies. The platform, which operates under the supervision of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), ensures compliance with data privacy and promotes responsible gaming.
The MPBL 2024 season is currently in the playoffs, with teams like San Juan, Caloocan, and Quezon advancing to the division semifinals. The introduction of fantasy gaming offers fans an opportunity to be more involved in the league’s action by managing their fantasy lineups and tracking real-time player performance.
Daily Fantasy is also planning future expansions, including adding more sports and leagues to its platform, along with new game formats. This collaboration with MPBL is expected to foster a more immersive experience for Filipino basketball fans.
