Singer Julie Anne San Jose issued a public apology today following backlash over her performance at the Nuestra Señora Del Pilar Parish in Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro.
The incident, which occurred during the Heavenly Harmony Concert (Harana para kay Maria), sparked controversy after videos surfaced online showing the singer performing Lady Gaga’s ‘Edge of Glory’ and ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ inside the church.
San Jose addressed the issue through a statement on her verified Facebook page, acknowledging the negative reaction and expressing her regret.
“I am offering my apologies. Even though my only intentions were to share joy and to give support to the church through the benefit concert, many have felt offended about the incident I was in and with my performance which caused distress. I truly, sincerely apologize,” she wrote.
The singer emphasized that the situation was a lesson learned and assured the public that such an incident would not be repeated. “I am not perfect but please know that I have strong beliefs and my faith is unbreakable and cannot be shaken. I pray that we can all move forward with compassion in our hearts. Thank you. ,” San Jose added.
The performance, which took place on October 6, was part of a benefit concert aimed at raising funds for the church’s development. However, netizens were quick to criticize the choice of venue and song selections, arguing that the concert should have been held outside the church to maintain its sanctity.
Sparkle GMA Artist Center, San Jose’s management, also released an official statement prior to her apology, taking full responsibility for the event. The agency admitted that it was their duty to properly coordinate with the organizers and ensure appropriate arrangements were made.
“Julie Anne only fulfilled her duties and commitment as a true professional. She is a devout Catholic and had no intention of disrespecting the Church or its members,” the statement said. Sparkle also extended their apology to those offended and assured that stricter measures would be implemented in future engagements to avoid similar issues.
Despite the backlash, it was clarified that the proceeds from the concert would go towards the development of the parish.
