Singer Gigi de Lana recently opened up about her emotional struggles following the passing of her mother, Imelda de Lana, in a heart-wrenching interview on ‘Toni Talks’ with Toni Gonzaga-Soriano.
Gigi, who has noticeably lost weight since her mother’s death four months ago, candidly shared her grief and how she continues to feel lost.
“Sa ngayon Ate (Toni) hindi ko alam para akong naliligaw pa rin until now lalo na nu’ng nawala ang mom (Imelda de Lana) ko,” Gigi shared during the interview. The singer described her mother as her main source of strength and motivation, especially during her performances.
Gigi recounted her last conversation with her mother via video call while she was in Canada for a concert tour with her band. Seeing her mother in great pain due to her worsening cancer, Gigi confessed that she prayed for her mother’s suffering to end. “Lord okay na po, kunin mo na siya,” she prayed after the call. Moments later, Gigi received the heartbreaking news that her mother had passed away.
“Sinisisi ko kasi ang sarili ko ate kung bakit siya lumala (kanser) ng ganyan,” Gigi tearfully admitted. She explained that due to financial struggles, she couldn’t afford the treatments her mother needed. “Kasi wala akong pera una, hindi ko siya mapagamot mag-isa lang ako, eh at siya lang din ‘yung lakas ko, siya lang,” the singer said, visibly emotional.
Despite the devastating news, Gigi continued with her scheduled concert in Canada. She shared that her mother had always taught her to remain professional, regardless of personal hardships. “You have to be professional all the time kasi hindi naman nila (audience) alam kung namatayan ka o hindi o kung ano ‘yung pinagdaraanan mo,” Gigi recalled her mother’s words.
Upon returning to the Philippines, Gigi made sure to see her mother one last time by having her body temporarily preserved. She reflected on the bittersweet moment, acknowledging that her mother’s six-year battle with cancer was finally over, allowing her to rest in peace.
