Veteran singer Dulce recently revealed an unexpected moment from her early career, recounting how she once fled from a clinic that intended to perform a nose surgery without her consent.
In an interview on ‘Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,’ Dulce shared that she was labeled a “rebel” by her management team for refusing to undergo cosmetic surgery, which they believed would enhance her appearance as she prepared for an album release.
“Ayokong pumayag na gawin ‘yung mukha ko,” Dulce said, explaining the origin of the “rebel” tag. Her management was keen on having her undergo a nose job to make her more “appealing” to a broader audience.
Dulce recounted how she was taken to a hospital without prior knowledge of the plan. When she arrived at a clinic, she realized that they were preparing to perform cosmetic work on her nose, which prompted her to run out.
“‘Ano ‘yan?’ Tapos drawing drawing kasi nga i-aayos na nga. No, I ran away. Tumakbo talaga ako. Sabi ko, ‘No. Hindi po ako puwede talaga magpagalaw,'” Dulce shared.
The singer firmly believed that her talent, especially her voice, was the key to her success, not her physical appearance. She feared that any changes to her nose could affect her singing.
“I really believe na kung dumating man ako rito, nakaabot ako ng Maynila, it’s because of the voice that God gave me. Ngayon meron akong fear na kapag ginalaw ang ilong, eh talaga magbabago or ano man ang mangyari,” Dulce explained.
Dulce, who hails from Cebu, began her career through singing contests in 1975. She gained widespread recognition in 1979 when she won the Asian Singing Competition with her powerful performance of ‘Ako Ang Nasawi, Ako Ang Nagwagi.’ Her other well-known songs include ‘Paano’ and ‘Kastilyong Buhangin.’
Dulce will perform at the Beyond Measure worship concert organized by CBN Asia, which is set to take place on September 24 at 5 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
