Veteran actress Carmi Martin has opened up about her decision to focus on television rather than film, revealing that she faced numerous challenges with producers in the 1980s.
In an interview with Snooky Serna, Martin disclosed that during her early career, she encountered inappropriate proposals from producers who pressured her to accept more provocative roles, including frontal nudity.
“Meron akong mga invitation na ganyan during that time, kasi nga ang seksi ko, e. And may mga producers din na talagang gustong nag-ano, nag-try na mag-take advantage sa akin, to the point na tinulak ko,” Martin explained.
Faced with these uncomfortable situations, Martin chose to pivot to television, which she found to be more regulated and respectful of her professional boundaries. This shift allowed her to build a successful and stable career.
Snooky Serna described the situation as the ‘Producer’s Touch,’ a term used to describe how some celebrities achieve success by accommodating the desires of producers.
Martin’s move to television proved to be a successful decision. Since her debut in 1978, she has maintained a steady stream of television projects, with her career remaining vibrant even during difficult periods such as the pandemic.
Starting her career as a model in the late 1970s, Martin transitioned to acting with a debut on television in 1978. The 1980s marked her rise to prominence with popular sitcoms like ‘Chicks to Chicks’ and ‘Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata.’ She also made significant contributions to cinema with roles in films such as ‘Bagong Hari,’ ‘Working Boys,’ and ‘Dobol Trobol: Lets Get Redi 2 Rambol!’
In the 2000s, Martin continued to thrive with notable film roles in ‘No Other Woman,’ ‘Working Girls,’ and ‘Four Sisters and a Wedding.’ Her versatility in both comedy and drama has solidified her status as a respected actress.
The 2010s saw a successful return to television, with roles in acclaimed series such as ‘The Better Half,’ ‘Since I Met You,’ and ‘Happy ToGetHer.’
