Arkin Magalona has spoken out against the criteria established by Andrew E’s Dongalo Wreckords for earning the title of ‘King of Pinoy Rap.’
In his remarks, the son of the late Master Rapper Francis Magalona stressed that such a title should not be based on specific “requirements,” but rather on public recognition and respect.
The controversy ignited after Dongalo Wreckords posted on Facebook on September 25, outlining three supposed criteria for being acknowledged as the ‘King of Pinoy Rap.’ These included having a history of rapping and public performances since 1986, releasing a retail rap album in 1990, and achieving platinum status with an album.
The post highlighted the milestones of both Andrew E and Francis Magalona, two prominent figures in the Philippine rap scene during the 1990s.
According to the label, “If you do not have those [three] requirements, you are just a simple, ordinary Pinoy rapper in the Philippines.”
In response, Arkin shared the post on his own Facebook page, declaring, “Wala sa metrics ang pagiging ‘king.’ Kung buhay pa tatay ko, siya pa mismo magsasabi niyan.” He emphasized that the title of “king” is something that is earned through public acclaim rather than arbitrary metrics.
Arkin also urged both veteran and emerging artists to showcase their true selves, reassuring them that there are many fans eagerly awaiting their new projects.
As of now, Dongalo Wreckords has yet to respond to Arkin’s statements.
