The intense struggle for survival takes center stage in the newly released Korean disaster thriller ‘Project Silence,’ now showing in theaters.
The film, which stars the late Lee Sun-kyun alongside Ju Ji-hoon, Kim Hie-won, and Kim Su-an, has quickly garnered attention for its gripping storyline and stellar cast.
Project Silence follows a group of survivors who find themselves stranded on Airport Bridge amidst dense fog, leading to dangerous low visibility. The treacherous conditions result in a series of catastrophic accidents, leaving the survivors in a desperate fight for their lives. The situation escalates when mutant dogs, the result of a military experiment known as ‘Project Silence,’ escape and begin hunting down anyone in their path.
Among those trapped are Jung-won (played by Lee Sun-kyun), a presidential aide, and his daughter Kyung-min (Kim Su-an); a tow truck driver (Ju Ji-hoon) with his loyal dog; a couple (Moon Sung-geun and Ye Su-jeong) returning from abroad; two siblings (Park Hee-von and Park Ju-hyun) who missed their flight; and Dr. Yang (Kim Hie-won), the scientist behind the disastrous experiment.
As the survivors confront the deadly dogs and the imminent collapse of the bridge, they must navigate through a landscape turned into a disaster zone, fighting against the odds to stay alive.
Directed by Kim Tae-gon, ‘Project Silence’ was honored with an invitation to the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023, where it was featured in the Midnight Screening section, a category dedicated to films with strong artistic and popular appeal.
“I aimed to capture the fear and tension when everyday situations suddenly become life-threatening,” Tae-gon said in a statement. The director, who also co-wrote the screenplay, is known for his work on films like Familyhood and Sunshine Boys, the latter earning a Best Screenplay award at the 2013 Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
‘Project Silence’ boasts contributions from some of the leading figures in Korean cinema. The film is produced by Kim Yong-hwa, director of Along with the Gods; features cinematography by Hong Kyung-pyo (Parasite, Snowpiercer); and includes a screenplay by Park Joo-suk (Train to Busan). Visual effects are handled by Dexter Studio, known for their work on Space Sweepers and Along with the Gods.
This release is one of the final works of Lee Sun-kyun, a beloved actor recognized for his performances in the critically acclaimed drama My Mister and the Oscar-winning film Parasite.
Project Silence is now playing in theaters nationwide, offering audiences a thrilling experience of survival against relentless dangers.
