Businessman and former Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson has pledged P5 million to Olympic gymnast Carlos Yulo if he successfully reunites with his family.
Singson made the offer in a video posted on Facebook, emphasizing the value of family unity over Yulo’s athletic accomplishments.
“Para lang magsama-sama silang mag-pamilya, magbibigay ako ng P5 milyon. Hindi [dahil] sa panalo niyang gold sa [Olympics], more on sa pamilya,” Singson said.
Singson expressed concern over the emotional strain within Yulo’s family, particularly between the gymnast and his mother, Angelica Yulo. “Masakit sa ama na aawayin ka ng anak mo at ‘di man lang sila inimbita,” he remarked.
The 24-year-old Yulo, who recently secured two gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has found himself at the center of a family controversy. Following his Olympic success, Yulo responded to public statements made by his mother regarding his relationship with Chloe San Jose and alleged issues surrounding his past winnings. Yulo stated that he had forgiven his mother “a long time ago.”
In response, Angelica Yulo held a tearful press conference where she apologized to her son and expressed a desire for reconciliation.
Singson acknowledged the difficulty of mending the relationship between Yulo and his mother, hinting at past conflicts that may have contributed to the rift. “Ang sigurado, si Carlos Yulo at ‘yung tatay, ‘yung pamilya nila. ‘Yung nanay ang kinakausap pa kasi masama ang loob nung bata kasi may away yata noong nakaraan,” he said.
When asked if the P5 million would still be offered if the family reunion was incomplete, Singson confirmed that he would still provide the amount. He also appealed to Yulo to forgive his mother, emphasizing the importance of family unity. “Honor thy father and mother, ‘di ba?” he added.
Meanwhile, Yulo’s father, Mark Andrew Yulo, has expressed hope for a family reunion. He was spotted at the welcome parade for the Philippine Olympians on August 14, holding a banner that read “Caloy, dito papa mo” and making a heart gesture toward his son.
Carlos Yulo later acknowledged his father’s support in a Facebook post, expressing gratitude and looking forward to reconnecting with him soon.
