Anjo Yllana revisited the well-known feud he had with Rustom Padilla in the 1990s, a conflict that played a key role in the latter revealing his true identity.
Rustom, an action star known for his “bad boy” image, was already the subject of industry rumors about his orientation. He eventually embraced his true self and transformed into BB Gandanghari.
The tension between Anjo and Rustom began during the production of the now-defunct sitcom ‘Palibhasa Lalaki,’ which featured both actors alongside Carmina Villaroel. Anjo recounted in an interview with Morly Alinio that the issue started when he was asked by the assistant director to joke about Rustom’s orientation during a rehearsal.
“Si Rustom ay bak…” Anjo recalled the line.
Although the joke was removed from the actual take, it was overheard by Carmina’s make-up artist, who misunderstood it as a genuine mockery. This information was relayed to Carmina and Rustom, sparking the controversy.
Carmina was upset and decided to leave the show. The incident led Rustom and his brother, Robin Padilla, to confront Anjo, escalating the situation further. The tension extended beyond the studio, affecting Anjo’s personal life as he was Robin’s neighbor at the time.
Reflecting on the incident three decades later, Anjo shared that he has since reconciled with all parties involved. He also mentioned that Robin had even encouraged him to run for senator, a suggestion he declined.
