The Philippines is set to experience a nostalgic blast from the past with the debut of the country’s first Pokémon-themed expo, ‘Pokeverse.’
The event, running from May 31 to June 2 at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall, promises to be a haven for die-hard Pokémon fans and 90s pop culture enthusiasts.
Headlining the expo are Jason Paige, the original singer of the iconic Pokémon theme song, and Veronica Taylor, the voice behind Ash Ketchum in the Pokémon series. This marks their first visit to the Philippines, creating a buzz among fans eager to meet their childhood idols and get their memorabilia signed.
At a press conference, Veronica Taylor expressed her gratitude for being associated with such a beloved show. “Being identified with Pokémon has given me validation as an actor. It’s allowed me to travel and meet fans worldwide. Despite working on numerous projects, Pokémon remains the one everyone knows and loves, allowing us to connect instantly,” she shared.
Jason Paige reflected on the growing recognition from Pokémon’s original fans, who were children in 1996 and have since grown into curious adults. “I’m profoundly grateful for the love from the Pokémon community. Until 2016, I received little recognition. It was only as fans matured that they sought out who sang the song of their childhood,” said Jason, who has also collaborated with music legends like Billy Joel and Michael Jackson.
Both artists highlighted the rewarding fan interactions that come with being part of a globally recognized brand. Veronica, now 58, recounted meeting fans as children and seeing them return years later with their own kids. “It’s incredible,” she said.
Jason shared touching fan stories, including one about a man who broke down in tears upon hearing the theme song again, recalling his late brother with whom he shared a Pokémon bond. “Music’s power cannot be underestimated,” he noted.
Kirck Allen, the young entrepreneur behind Pokeverse, co-producing with his mother, feng shui master Marites Allen, aims to create a comprehensive gathering for anime lovers, cosplayers, the Pokémon community, and pop culture fans. “We’re positioning Pokeverse as the premier Pokémon-themed expo, with plans for an even larger event on Pokémon’s 30th anniversary in two years,” Kirck stated.
He elaborated on the expo’s immersive setup. “Each area has its own theme within Pokeverse, resembling different cities and towns. Attendees can create their own journeys and experiences, culminating in meeting Jason and Veronica for a personalized touch.”
